Got a question:
I noticed after installing Spybot and ASquare that my site advisor does not work. Then I search and find it isn't even in my computer but the toolbar is still at top (in gray). I am confused.
I am wondering if Spybot or ASquared had anything to do with it. I deleted something in ASquare and wonder if that might have been SA. This thought just hit me as I am typing. Will let you know if I find it.
In the meantime, is thee a connection?????? _________________

Hmmm, not aware of any conflicts, Jane, and can't find anything about any possible conflicts on the Net. Do you know what asquared found and what you deleted? Look see if there is an asquared file named LastScan.txt in the Log folder:
C:\Program Files\a-squared free\logs
and see if it contains any information about whatever it is that you deleted. Perhaps it did detect something in siteadvisor and registered a "false positive", but I can't tell without knowing what you deleted. I might add that before I delete things that my scanners find, I always check them out first to see if I have a possible "false positive," as up to now that has been the case for me. I haven't detected any "real" malware on my computer in years because of the safeguards that I have installed and the practices I have adopted in surfing the Internet (see Tutorial Stickies #3, #4, #12, and #20).
The only thing I can suggest at this point is to set a restore point and re-install SiteAdvisor and see if it starts working properly again. You might check to see if it is in Add/Remove programs first and if it is, try uninstalling it before re-installing it.
I don't use SiteAdvisor in same way that you and most others do, i.e., I have never downloaded it onto my computer. I just go directly to www.siteadvisor.com and input the URL of the site I have a question about (near the bottom right of the page). I try to keep my computer as free as possible from applications downloaded from the internet if there is another way of accomplishing the same thing, so I cannot test and verify what happened in your case. _________________ Repa

I was on the McAfee Forums and it appears SA is down in some areas. I have asked which areas and am waiting to see if I get an answer. I am doing nothing now until I hear. It appears I am not the only one with this problem.
Thanks _________________

Jane,
I have Site Advisor installed on my XP which is still on IE6 and I have no problems
I have not yet install it on my Vista which has IE7 but I decided to do a search on Site Advisor + IE7 and it seems there is a problem... see here http://www.wilderssecurity.com/showthread.php?t=144948
One person reported this too at that site _________________

I went to your link, Sam, and the posts there, if you read through all of them, talk about a couple of problems that are reasons why I don't like downloading tools like SiteAdvisor and just go to their web page to get information about other sites. _________________ Repa

Yes I used to do that, but for some reason it takes for ever to open all those pages for me.
As I have it installed on my IE6 and I goggle... I see right away a green site... if I am interested I click to enter the report right away.
After reading the incompatibilitiess it has with IE7 and its Anti-Phising application's - I agree, and will not install it on IE7. But with IE8 out... one may never know _________________

The below quotes from the posts in that link are what bothers me about downloading SiteAdvisor on my computer:
| Quote: |
...why ever since this McAfee has taken over, my machine is bombarded from 216.143.70.105 and 216.143.70.73.... I Emailed SA but got short shrift and told SA had not checked those sites yet - I Emailed again to tell them they were their own sites and asked what they were up to - no reply.
Curr Ports shows them calling home and I am wondering if all users are being treated in the same manner.
11/21/2006 19:13:19.720 Alert Security Services Gateway Anti-Virus Alert: Zlob.AWU (Trojan) blocked 216.143.70.73, 80, X1, pla-sadownload.mcafee.com
I don't use McAfee. So, why would McAfee send Zlob, a viral signature for Zlob or anything AT ALL to me? Is it because of my SiteAdvisor program? |
