Hi everyone
I am so sorry I have been absent so long. I have been very sick and had toe surgery that got infected and the list goes on. I will not whine. Just have not been able to email much or post much. I tried to get online on Feb 8th and got logged in and the pc froze and I lost internet connection all together. they said my modem was fine that it was something on my pc blocking my service. I tried to do a system restore as AVG had just updated and that made it worse. I lost IE. It won't work at all, I can't click in any link in an email, is doesn't work, I can't do any restore points. I followed all the instructions Mike had given me a while back and that didn't help much. I have tried other steps that Repa posted way back on the older board. I can't take updates as IE doesn't work at all. I think as much as I hate too, the only thing I can do is a system recovery.
Mike or anyone, can you please tell me how to backup my favorites on Firefox as I have a ton and do not want to lose them. Could you make this a sticky and add the link for installing Firefox again please. Many of my favorites were also in IE and it doesn't work.
I want to be an active member and love this board. I know it may seem I just pop in when I need help. I truly can not control this disorder I have and my health is very poor. I am trying to get things organized better but you know that ole devil kicks you when you're down. I won't quit though. I would appreciate prayers please.
thanks everyone and I pray things are well with you. I pray for you all every single day. I have been devoting my mornings to God. studying and reading the word as all these things have just added to my depression. God will free me though. Believe that! It's true. Thanks for the help. _________________

Linda, if you can open your IE browser, you can use the Imprort/Export Wizard to backup your Favorites for IE:
1. On your IE browser menu bar, Select File > Import and Export. The wizard will open.
2. Follow the prompts to Export Favorites. A file will be created in your My Documents folder called "bookmark.htm. Point your backup routine to that file in your "My Documents" folder and back it up onto your CD.
3. When you have your computer running again, open the Import and Export wizard and import the backup file from the CD following the wizard prompts.
Alternatively, you can point your backup routine to the "Favorites" folder in the following path:
C:\Documents and Settings\"your user account name"\Favorites
and backup the entire Favorites folder. When it comes time to restore your new Favorites folder, just drag the contents from the backup folder to the new folder.
For Mozilla Firefox:
1. On the Firefox browser menu bar, select Bookmarks > Bookmark Manager. A window will open for the Bookmark Manager.
2. On the menu bar of the Bookmarks Manager, select File > Export. A window will open, and at the top of the window it should say Save in: My Documents.
3. On the bottom of the window, you should see the File Name: bookmarks.html. Click on the "Save" button. The file bookmarks.html will be saved in your My Documents folder.
4. Point your backup routine to your "My Documents" folder and select the file bookmarks.html.
5. When you get your system running again, all you have to do is import the file bookmarks.html that you backed up in step 4 above. _________________ Repa

Linda
If you can not be 100% sure that your files are virus free then you must be very careful when you re-install them. I suggest that this be the last thing you do in the re-installation so that you have an updated virus detector to scan them with. Most of the favorites, installation files for utilities, and data can fit on a DVD that you can scan with the AVG scanner. The security app installers should be placed on a separate DVD or CD from everything else so that you can install them first. Do all of the updates to these and then scan the backup media for infections. _________________ "Right now I'm having amnesia and deja vu at the same time. I think I've forgotten this before." |

AVG will allow you to select files and drives to scan separately from the others in the system. This is why AVG should be the first thing installed and updated. Opening the control panel for AVG to the test center will show you a very easy to use interface for this process. Everything that you backup from your system in it's present state should be scanned before re-installation. _________________ "Right now I'm having amnesia and deja vu at the same time. Thank you Keith
I thought so. I wanted to check back and see what was posted and I am backing up things tonight. I will finish tomorrow hopefully. I appreciate all the help and advice. _________________
