Hi everyone
I have been gone for a while. I have missed you all. My health was very bad for quite a while. I was trying to get ready to start the recovery on my pc and I received a pop up that there was an update for Zone Alarm. I tried to take the update and I kpet get pop windows about True Vector being turned on and going to the service mgr to turn it off. Didn't understand any of it. ZOne Alarm would not even load when booting pc. I removed it and tried to reinstall it and got these same messages. I went to the Zone Alarm site to see if I could find some answers and googled a few things. At the moment I just turned on my Windows Firewall until I can get this corrected. Even with the recovery it seems I won't be able to reinstall Zone alarm which I need when I do the recovery unless I get rid of everything. It says you have to shut down the True Vector when I tried to take the upgrade. Zone Alarm has their instant support which is not a human but it did answer mt question. I wanted to run it by Repa and Keith and see what they thought before I removed anything. This is the answer that Zone Alarm's instant support gave me:
it said to double click the system32 folder
right click zonelabs or zonealarm folder, click delete and choose yes
close window, empty recycle bin
try to install the latest version again
I tried this but when looking in my system32 folder I didn't see any folder with these names. This is all I saw related to Zone alarm:
an icon that said zlcomm.dll and another one that said zlcommdb.dll
it also had 2 icons that said zonedoff and zonedof, these type said they were registration entries and not sure the last 2 have anything to do with ZOne alarm. I was scared to delete the first 2 I listed as I don't want to mess up the pc worse.
I then went to their ZOne Alarm forum and this is what someone posted and said to do:
To remove ZoneAlarm completely from your computer in case normal uninstall can’t be run or doesn’t run properly, do the following:
* Right click the ZoneAlarm systray icon and click Restore ZoneAlarm Control Center.
Go to Overview > Preferences and uncheck Load ZoneAlarm at startup.
Close Control Center, right click the icon again and then click Shutdown ZoneAlarm.
Note: If you're unable to carry out this step because the icon is missing, you can skip it and proceed with the next steps, but in this case do them all in safe mode!
* REBOOT
* Go to Start > Programs > ZoneLabs and click Uninstall, or uninstall ZA using Control Panel > Software > Add/Remove Programs.
If a security check appears, click Yes and continue the uninstall procedure.
* REBOOT
* Make sure hidden files and folders are shown. To do so open Windows Explorer. Depending on your OS click Tools or View and then Folder Options > View.
Choose Show hidden files and folders, uncheck Hide protected operating system files (Windows 2000/XP/2003 only) and click OK.
* Next go to Start > Search > Files and Folders. Make sure the location box is set to search your Local Hard Drive (usually C:\ ) or All Local Drives. Also make
sure the Advanced Search Options are set to search subfolders and hidden files. Now copy the entire line below, paste it into the search box and click Search Now.
Zonelabs; "zone labs"; "Internet logs"; vsconfig.xml; vsdata.dll; vsdata95.vxd; vsdatant.sys; vsmon.*; vsmonapi.dll; vsnetutils.dll;vspubapi.dll; zaplus.*; zapro.*; zllictbl.dat; zlparser.dll; zonealarm.exe; zoneband.dll; vsutil.dll; zlclient.*
A list of files and folders belonging to ZoneAlarm will appear in the Search Results pane.
Note: if you’re using McAfee software be sure to check the vsutil.dll if found: right click the file and choose Properties. Verify it belongs to ZoneLabs.
If it does not do not remove it. Now proceed by deleting all ZoneLabs files and folders that were found.
* Empty the Recycle Bin.
* Now remove all ZoneLabs keys that may be left in the Windows registry. To do this copy the lines below and paste them into Notepad.
Save the file as zabegone.reg, double click it and allow for the registry changes to be made.
REGEDIT4
[-HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\ZAMailSafe]
[-HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Zone Labs]
[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Zone Labs]
[-HKEY_USERS\.DEFAULT\Software\Zone Labs]
* REBOOT
ZoneAlarm will now be completely removed from your computer. If you wish to install a new copy of ZA, be sure to do so under an administrator account
with full rights and permissions.
There again, I am scared to delete things. I feel much better and more secure getting an ok from Repa or Keith. Not to take anything away from everyone else that has great knowledge. I've just worked with Repa and Keith on getting ready for my recovery on my pc. I have to get this taken care of so i can make a copy of it once I do the recovery. So any help would be greatly appreciated.
I'm sorry it's taken so long to get back to you all. I was so sick and got severely depressed. My daughter is not any better. Dr said I needed to get away so my husband said we were going on a much needed vacation for both of us. We went to Colorado for a week. It was hard sitting in a car for that long of a drive because of the pain but well worth it. I came back ready to get things accomplished. My sister bought me a super nice laptop but I am going by all the steps that Repa and Keith took time to type out and post for me and I won't go out of order. I need to do the recovery on my desk top and then connect the new router when I get to that step and then I can open my laptop. It's still in the box and unopened. I will have to learn to use Vista but that will be questions for another day. Right now I need to get this Zone Alarm issue fixed.
God bless you all and I am so happy to be back. Having a laptop will allow me to post regularly as I can't sit at the desk for real long times when my pain is so bad and I miss out on things. I so appreciate what my sister did for me. I am rambling but just wanted to give an update and ask for help.

Linda,
first of all, welcome back, and you know we missed you.
I am sorry to have to tell you that you might have to be a bit patient right now: Repa is out of town for 10 days with only intermittent access to a computer; and Keith's wife is in the hospital for exploratory surgery, so Keith won't be here very often, if at all, for a while.
And you know me: I know a little, but not enough to be of any help with your problems, and I am sorry about that.
I am sure when Repa checks in, he will try to answer your questions as soon as possible.
I am glad you are better again for the time being. Keep checking in and you will get Repa's reply.
Hope to see you soon.

Hello Linda,
Nice to have you back. Regarding ZoneAlarm; since you are doing a destructive recovery of your desktop, you do not have to worry about ZoneAlarm, or deleting anything. The destructive recovery will completely clear your hard drive of everything. You can get another copy of the installation application of ZoneAlarm at the ZoneAlarm site when you finish with the recovery and it will install just fine. But, if you install the router and use Windows Firewall, then you won't really need ZoneAlarm anymore. Besides, the Vector Engine is a resource hog. I recommend ZoneAlarm for folks who are not using a router, but it is not necessary for those who do have one as long as you surf in a Limited User Account or use DropMyRights when surfing. Here is what I recommend you do:
1. Forget about ZoneAlarm for now and do your Destructive Recovery following the steps I gave you previously.
2. Unpack your new laptop computer and set up your wireless router using that computer. You can do this before or after you do the recovery on your desktop. You may have to call the tech support number for Linksys (I assume you got a Linksys Wireless router?) for help in configuring a secure wireless connection for your laptop. You do not need a cable to connect your laptop to your new router as the new laptop comes with a wireless capability built-in so you can use the laptop from any location in your home without having to connect a cable to it. You will need a CAT5 cable to connect from your router to your modem. You will use the same port on the modem to connect your router as you now use to connect your desktop. Follow the directions and the CD provided with the router, but if you become unsure of what to do, call Linksys Tech Support 800 number and they will guide you through the procedure over the phone. They are very helpful, so don't hesitate to call them if you feel the least bit unsure of yourself.
3. When you are finished with your destructive recovery and have your antivirus program installed and running (I think the directions Keith and I gave you were to copy the Installation application for AVG or Avast to your backup CD), and you have your peripherals connected (Printer, Scanner, etc), then use the cable you currently have going from your desktop to your modem and connect it to one of the ports on your router. Use your Network Setup Wizard to establish your desktop connection to the Internet if it doesn't already connect itself (i.e., if you can't get to the Internet without using the wizard).
4. Don't go anywhere on the internet with your desktop except to update your anti-virus program. Then install and update your anti-spyware programs (See sticky #6 in the Tutorials forum under Windows Computer Help for help if needed). Then, it will be safe for you surf again in a Limited User account. You can come here to keep me posted on your progress and ask questions, if needed. If your husband uses the desktop, make sure his account is a Limited User Account.
If you follow the directions I gave you previously and above, you should be fine. Remember, forget about ZoneAlarm for now. You won't need it with the router, but if it makes you feel more secure, install it after you complete the recovery and have installed and updated your anti-virus program. If you do install it, remember to disable Windows Firewall after you have it installed, updated and working properly. _________________ Repa

Linda,
As a matter of info, most newer laptops have a built in wireless 802. network interface in the back of the computers, so you probally will not need a separate router wired or otherwise to hook up. If you don't want to use the one on the laptop, you can purchase a wireless "PMCIA" card which comes with the software for installation. Yuo install the software and go through the instructions and then slide the card in the laptop port. _________________ Ted /prophotoimages

Linda, don't be concerned about Vista. It's just another operating system and will likely be transparent to you as far as use of your system is concerned. Follow the instructions come with your laptop for setting it up and operating it, and then just use it in the same way as you do your desktop. Good luck on the desktop recovery! _________________ Repa

Yes, Linda, your laptop will be fine without ZoneAlarm. Vista is supposed to be more secure than XP. With the router, you don't need ZoneAlarm on any of your computers. Just be sure the Windows and Vista Firewalls are enabled. _________________ Repa
