I'm thinking of changing my towing vehicle and would be very interested in members' recommendations for a short wheelbase that will tow at least 2000kg. I don't want anything as big as a Discovery - I wondered about a Mitsubishi Shogun or maybe a Freelander? BTW, it will have to be a used vehicle, probably 4-5yrs old so new models aren't contenders!! Thanks for your help!

I would steer clear of a freelander, not really beefy enough to tow safely any distance !! If you want a swb 4x4 best bet would be a shogun or a defender, something with plenty of power.

Thanks, Owen!! Mmm, I had wondered about the Freelander and whether it was really up to the job. I'll probably have a look at the Shogun - Lou K had a LWB one for a long time and loved it... I've currently got a 1980 Landy, just for towing as I also have a Polo - it does the job very well but I could really do with PAS. The next one will be a replacement for both as I don't want to have a lot tied up in a 'spare' vehicle - I don't know if I'd want a Defender for my only car, I need to think a bit about that!

Thanks again for your reply - and thanks for joining the board!

have you thought about one of the many 4x4 pickup trucks wiv the crew cabs ?they are all capable of towing more than 2000  and have all the luxury of a car wiv the added bonus of all feed hay etc can go straight in back so no mess in side , i have one and everybody is so surprised how nice they are

Not really, I must admit... I'd be happy in principle, but it's the parking!!  I do need 4 seats so it would be quite long, and that's what I don't fancy - I'm really after a SWB. Of course what I really want is a Tardis - that looks like a Polo but will tow like a Landrover!!

It does sound impressive - I just wish the Freelander were a better bet as it would be perfect for me as it's smallish and has 5 doors - unfortunately the reviews are very mixed, and, as Owen pointed out, it's not that beefy!

That certainly seems to be a common opinion! Anyway, deal done this afternoon on a SWB Mitsy Pajero - it's only an M reg but we know its history and will do the job nicely.

Thanks for your input, and thanks to owend for his! - it's been a great help.
