I think we should set this in present day, or years later.
Reason 1: Many characters are dead and that would be weird for HP fans to see the characters very much alive.
Reason 2: If this game continues for a long time, it would also be weird for Harry, Ron and Hermione to be hanging around hogwarts for the rest of their lives.
Reason 3:

If we set it in the present day there wouldn't be the problem of Harry and Ginny's, Ron and Hermione's, and Other Character's children in the game since they do not occur until about 10 years later.
Reason 4: We could entirely reinvent the professors since some could retire, or something.

On the thing of Voldemort and Deatheaters still being in the game, without reincarnating Voldemort, Deatheaters could just be a group that wishes to keep the spirit of Voldemort alive. Kind of like a cult of some sort that does bad things. Or a gang, whichever you choose.
I have to disagree as HP fans will expect to see their favourite characters at Hogwarts with them. I know we want realism but we do need it set during the Harry Potter series. We could have Voldemort popping up from time to time but I would also like to disagree with fighting Voldemort. I would just like to say that I think it would be better to see Voldemort talking to Death Eaters.
Bloobat said it would be like a what if "Voldemort did not attack Harry during Hogwarts".Also Harry and the rest will be in year 7(hopefully they will grow) and Voldemort will be back in power. I like this better then your ideas actually.No offense. _________________
I dont know if well have hary and that in the game, i remember a thread about it and it sounded way too troublesome, remember this is hogwarts online. Based on hogwarts i belive, not harry potter online.

I wanted to add Harry Potter himself in the game and also Voldemort. I also mentioned you could duel Voldemort somewhere in a post. However I thought about it: it couldn't work well. Some noobs would probably wait for him to respawn and try to fight him themselves. Also it would be weird for him to keep respawning. I dont know what age I want Harry though. And dueling Voldemort wont be avalible but you may see him every once and a while. About the death eaters: they are still around.

Fine to me. Makes perfect sense. I wouldnt try to fight Voldemort AKA. Commit Suicide anyway. _________________
