SIOUX CITY -- Local animal control officers removed 32 dogs and a cat from a Sioux City house, saying the number of pets far exceeded city ordinance.
However, they say the animals were not abused or malnourished.
"This was a unique situation where we had an owner who took care of her dogs better than herself," said Rarrat, owner of Sioux City Animal Control. "She had 32 dogs and she lived very meagerly and she loved her dogs."
She said the animals' owner surrendered the dogs -- including collies, shelties, shiba inus among others -- to officers on Tuesday afternoon.
The animals' former owner will not face charges, but city officials red-tagged her home on the 300 block of Turner Street. It is not clear where the woman is staying.
"We wish her well and all we can do from our standpoint is do the best that we can to find all these animals loving homes," Rarrat said.
Several breed-rescue groups from across the country have already shown interesting in placing the dogs, Rarrat said. On Thursday, two of the dogs will be sent to rescue groups in Omaha.
Many local volunteers, including groomers from PetSmart, spent Tuesday and Wednesday grooming, bathing and sprucing up the dogs in anticipation of upcoming an adoption event.
