TRENTON — Twelve local governments seeking to share services to try to cut property taxes received state help on Friday.

The state announced it was giving $148,000 total to the locales to help study and implement shared services.

Promoting shared services was a key part of recent efforts by the Legislature and Gov. Jon S. Corzine to try to cut property taxes that are twice the national average.

Many pin high taxes on the state's many local governments, including its 561 municipalities -- the most per square-mile of any state.

"Towns that study or implement shared services are showing a commitment to driving down costs and increasing government efficiency,'' Corzine said.

Cape May County gets a $19,636 grant to study interconnecting technology with Upper Township and Wildwood City.

Ocean City gets a $41,000 grant to study sharing garbage and recycling collection with Sea Isle City, Avalon Borough and Dennis and Upper Townships.

Kinnelon gets a $2,450 grant to help pay for sharing a chief financial officer with Boonton.

Washington in Mercer County gets an $85,313 to provide emergency medical services in Hightstown.
