Cameron Diaz filming Canadian series in Peru
Updated Tue. Jun. 26 2007 11:32 AM ET

eTalk

Blonde bombshell Cameron Diaz has recently come under fire for sporting a political slogan while in Peru.

The slogan, "Serve the People," made by Communist leader Mao Zedong, was emblazoned on a bag that Diaz was photographed carrying.

In the late 1980s and early 1990s, the Maoist Shining Path insurgency brought Peru to the edge of chaos, with massacres, assassinations and bombings -- and still causes anguish across the country.

Diaz has since apologized.

According to eTalk, CTV has confirmed that Diaz is in Peru filming an episode of a new show called "4REAL."

The half-hour series, which will appear in Canada on CTV and MTV, takes celebrity guests on global adventures in order to connect with young leaders who are creating social and economic change.

Other celebrities that will be included on the show include Joaquin Phoenix, Mos Def, M.I.A. and K'naan and Flea from the Red Hot Chili Peppers.

Joaquin Phoenix serves as one of the show's executive producers, with Haddock Entertainment, a Vancouver-based company, in association with CTV and MTV.

On becoming a producer/director... It is another path for growth. No one should stand still...not at any time in their life. New challenges keep life interesting...and at the level of intensity that JP acts, he could burn out at some point without other creative outlets...jmho.

Another article about Joaquin producing and hosting one program
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Phoenix and Haddock get Real for CTV

VANCOUVER -- Homegrown talents Sol Guy and Josh Thome are hip-hopping around the world with celebrities such as Joaquin Phoenix, Cameron Diaz, Mos Def, Charlize Theron and Flea of the Red Hot Chili Peppers to make 4Real, a doc series for CTV and MTV about young people using art and culture to change their worlds.

"We're merging social change and entertainment," says Guy, an MTV host and producer of hip-hop acts including Lauryn Hill and P. Diddy, who reconnected with childhood friend and activist/filmmaker Thome to create, produce and host the series.

"We were frustrated with the state of the industry," says Guy, and "wondered why our worlds didn't meet, or if they did it was corny or sickening." According to Guy, he and his collaborators bought "a cheap camera from Future Shop" and started filming hip-hop happenings and youth activists around the world while piggybacking on Thome's documentary projects.

Fast forward five years. Guy and Thome approach Chris Haddock (Intelligence) with footage of hiking in Peru with a young medicine man, and through the Kibera slums of Kenya to meet Salim Mohamed, who runs a community medical clinic and a sports program for more than 5,000 youths.

"We explained our vision, and Chris Haddock immediately offered to executive produce. He asked for nothing, no ownership, gave us an office to work out of, and all the support we needed," says Guy, from his Vancouver office at Haddock Entertainment. Phoenix is also on board as an exec producer and hosts one episode.

Ultimately, Guy hopes that the shows will do more than just entertain. "We used really small crews -- our budget is low -- so we can recoup what we made to create awareness of these people around the world who change lives, and if the people who are watching are moved to give to these people in the stories they see, it goes from there. We're not gatekeepers. We're just combining entertainment and activism."

The 8 x 30 series will air on CTV and MTV this fall.

My Google alert sent me this morning:

Warner Music Has a Non-Hit in 'Hairspray'

Here's another sad week for Warner Music Group, aka WMG, which I like to call Warner Miscellaneous Group.

The soundtrack CD to "Hairspray" is a top five hit this week, but it isn't theirs. As WMG's stock sinks lower day by day, "Hairspray" is a hit that might have been.

You see, "Hairspray" is on New Line Records, a division of New Line Cinema, which itself is part of Time Warner.

Before Time Warner sold WMG to Edgar Bronfman Jr., et al, they would probably have released the "Hairspray" CD through WEA (that's the WMG distribution arm) and made a little dough.

Alas, New Line Records is now distributed through independent Alternative Distribution Alliance and not through WEA. The money from the "Hairspray" CD is going directly to savvy New Line Cinema execs Bob Shaye and Michael Lynne.

What's interesting is that New Line Records exists at all. They even have their own Web site that features a roster of 11 artists separate from their soundtracks. For instance, they have Albert Hammond Jr., of The Strokes, who is the son of the man who penned and sang the great classic "It Never Rains in Southern California."

Who knew? Apparently, no one. The Hammond album, called "Yours to Keep," released in March, got great reviews and also had a video directed by Joaquin Phoenix. But in keeping with the record biz's stealth approach to putting out new music, the whole thing was kept a secret. And very effectively, I might add.

New Line Records would do well to hire a good publicist and put some money into promotion. Hammond would be a good place to start.

Warner Miscellaneous Group's stock price was around $12.76 in after-hours trading last night. A little over a year ago it was $30. The company gives its quarterly report on Aug. 7. That should be quite a conference call.
