It is the same as on DJ!
Girls, here is my promised report about 42nd International Festival in Karlovy Vary, Czech Republic. Probably a bit chaotic. I am sorry for this.
The event took place from 29. 6. till 7. 7. 2007. Ary, me and other friends attended festival from evening 4. 7. till 7. 7. There was a little adventure, at the beginning. We had promised to stay in a flat. But the man with who we had that arranged called us to a bus, that we couldn´t stay there. There was a problem with water. We thought, that we would be sleeping outside just in our sleeping bags (it was raining). It is impossible to find accommodation in Karlovy Vary during the festival. You must book accommodation months before or stay in a tent in “a tent-town” (but we didn´t have a tent with us). The man wasn´t very willing to help us, but at the end he arranged, that we could stay in his friend´s flat (very dirty and stinking – man´s smelly socks, pants and T-shirts – I had to use my Dior on everything to survive the night). But the next day he found for us a room with a shower, so it was OK. Three of us slept on a sofa and three on a floor. But it was nice and clean. From now on everything went great. For the breakfast we went to a sweetshop and for lunch or dinner to a restaurant. We were eating, watching movies, walking, eating, watching movies, walking ........ Karlovy Vary is a spa town with a long tradition with beautiful architecture. Very romantic place for walks.
Except movies we have seen Danny DeVito when he was interviewed by Czech TV. I took some pics of him (I will send them later). He got Crystal Globe for outstanding artistic contribution to world cinema.
We have also seen the red carpet before the final ceremony. Again Danny DeVito, some Czech Actors, directors, politics ... From those you could know Vaclav Havel (former Czech President and play writer) and Zdenek and Jan Sverak. Zdenek Sverak is a screen writer and his son Jan is a director. They got The Oscar for Kolja in 1997.
The festival also attended Renee Zellweger. She introduced her film Miss Porter. She presented a Crystal Globe for Outstanding Artistic Contribution to World Cinema to the great Czech animator Bretislav Pojar at the opening ceremony. She got lost her luggage at the airport so she had to give The Crystal Globe to Bretilav Pojar just in jeans and sweater. She looked great anyway. But I saw her only in Newspapers, because she left Karlovy Vary before I came.
There were more then 220 feature films and up to 40 short films from all over the world in several sections. In the main competition were 14 films.
Here is the link with the Awards: http://www.kviff.com/en/news-live/2007-07-07/826-42nd-kv-iff-awards/
What we have seen:
The Good Night (US, UK) – Dany DeVito and director Jake Paltrow introduced the film.
Pudor (Spain)
My brother is an only child / Mio fratelo é figlio unico) (Italy, France)
Damage (Ireland) – director Aisling Walsh and actor David O'Hara introduced the film.
The last train/Der letzte Zug (Germany, Czech Republic) – Ary haven´t seen this one.
Golden Door /Nuovomondo (Italy, France)
Penelope (USA)
Flight of the red balloon /Le voyage du ballon rouge (France)
Dreams of dust/Réves de poussiére (Burkina Faso, Canada, France) – director Laurent Salgues introduced the film.
Hounds/Jagdhunde (Germany)
How is your fish today?/Jin tian de yu zen me yang? (China, UK) – just Ary have seen it.
Jimmy on the hill/Jimmy della collina (Italy)
My favourites:
The last train - it is Germany-Czech film about transport of Jews to Auschwitz. Intimate story about people from one truck of the train. Very strong and touching. I had no idea that there was such a film. No word about it in Czech media. I don´t know if it will be in Czech cinemas.
Golden Door – about emigrants at the beginning of 20th century who left Italy in the hope that, in America they will find promised land.
Penelope – fairy-tail with Christina Ricci and James McAvoy. This film reminded me about Edward Scissorhands – not typical festival film, but very cute and refreshing.
I liked all the films which I have seen, except “Flight of the red balloon”. It was film with Juliette Binoche and even thought I like her very much, I fell asleep.
I also fell asleep while watching “My brother is an only child”. It was very good movie, but I was just too tired.
Later on I will send some pics and a video with Dany DeVito. Very bad quality, but funny. _________________
