'Indigo' promotes green living, non-toxic homes
THE STORE AIMS TO SELL NON-TOXIC HOUSEWARE.

Computer-motherboard clocks, carpets made from recycled soda bottles and biodegradable diapers fit for compost fill the mazes of shelves.
These are only some of the items eco-friendly consumers will find at Indigo, Gainesville's new "green" store located at 322 SW Fourth Ave.
Store owner Liberty Phoenix, 31, felt families and architects needed safer materials to work with when cleaning or renovating their homes. Many common household items, such as paints and window cleaners, contain toxins and can be dangerous to those nearby, she said.
Phoenix, the sister of actor Joaquin Phoenix, said she doesn't think people have a clue about how many toxic products, from carpets to roofing material, affect our health.
Manager Michael Amish, 34, believes learning about these harmful materials is like opening Pandora's box. Once consumers become conscious of their surroundings, they'll want to do more to make a positive change in their environment.
Indigo has the resources that allow these positive changes to happen, Amish said.
Connie Caldwell, a 65-year-old customer who recently purchased bamboo flooring and paint for her remodeling project, said she considers her decision to go green a healthy one.
"We're not taking toxic chemicals into the house," she said.
The store relies on a GreenSpec directory to find its environmentally friendly building supplies.
"It's kind of like the Bible for green builders," Amish said.
Since Indigo helps people build against the growing threat of global warming, it has heard its share of criticism from climate-change disbelievers and those who view the store as inefficient.
People wonder if the store is really green, for example, if it's spending so much gas to import bamboo products from China, Phoenix said.
"There are two sides of green, always," she said. "You just have to try to do the best you can. Maybe it's not the most efficient to begin with, but [we're] going to get there."
The store is taking small steps to become a greener building. Amish and Phoenix plan to plant a garden-topped "living roof" on the building, install a rain catcher to catch rainwater in barrels, use solar power and plant trees that create natural shade.
In August, the store plans to have a back-to-school sale as well as open their newest addition, Ladybird Hair Salon. The salon will offer vegan hair products and a hair-color line that isn't tested on animals. _________________

Thank you Sabine for this. It is great to see, how people are more and more concern about ecology and that there is need of such a shops. It is not easy in my country, but it is getting better and better.
You are still an "ufo" in my country when you donīt eat meatl, but even this is changing. Yesterday I was in a restaurant with my friend. We had a pizza. Each of us just a half. We asked them to made half with a bacon and half without a bacon. The waiter came back to say me, that cook said, that he canīt do it, because the fat from a bacon will melt and will be on my vegetarian half. It very pleased me, that he botherd to tell me. _________________

The Phoenix family is so earth/animal/peace friendly! It's why I admire them so much. Trying to make the earth a safer place to live. I could really get into this non toxic home product thing.
It's convincing the rest of my family. That would be a problem. But I'll keep trying until they give up!! _________________

Does anyone know if Liberty is going to have an online store? ...or if she has a web site up already? I would hope she would add some public education to her endeavors... very much needed... Nice picture of her Kate, where did you find it? _________________
