Kids can be cruel in High School.  I think Sigrid sounds mysterious and attractive.  You may be right about the HO-WA-KEEN. In an interview with Oprah she asked Joaquin how to pronouce his name.  He said to say the J as an H.

Oh, forgive me!  I meant to direct my last post to Lola.  So sorry :-( It was late at night and I had Joaquin on the brain!  Could it be used as an insanity defense?  Possibly.  Sigrid

Hi Sig!

I can't believe you're posting on my board???  bah  Hehehe, glad you do.

Hey there, Bine.  I screwed up my first post, as you can see because I thought I was talking to you but it was Lola.  Anyway, that's really funny that you know so many Sigrids.  I never knew any.  Of course, if I'd been raised in Iceland with my ancestors, my name would have been as common as Smith.

Interesting also that your name was so common in your school.  I know one or two Sabines -- definitely cool people wink

Yeah, it seems really silly to strive for the autograph.  Maybe I should push for an in-person meeting instead.  Him to fly out here and act as Dr. Gregory House; the reason I am hooked on House is because I've been chronically sick since I was hit by a drunk driver years ago and I need someone to CURE me and SAVE me.  Either one of those men will do.

Love to you and I really like your board but I am slow on message boards, Sig

Sig!!! Good luck with the autograph. Let us know when you get it.
I also had problems with my name. In full lengh my name is Jindřiška. I am not going to explain how to pronaunce it.  grin  Jindra is OK, but when I was child children teased me for the name Jindřiška. It is a bit oldfashioned. And what is worse! I am the third Jindřiška in my family.  angry English version of my name is Henrietta. So I hear on name Henry as well, because they called me like this when I was au-pair in England.

PS: I am sorry to hear about your health problems. I hate careless drivers and even worse when they are drunk. No comment for this.

Jindra,

Thanks for the good wishes about the autograph.  Fingers crossed!  It's not much even if I get it -- not exactly like meeting THE man but I feel kind of like Sabine in that if I met him, it would make no difference whatsoever *how* his name was actually pronounced because I would be saying WA-WHU-DUH-UMM-HELP!!!!

That's really funny about your own name, especially with three in the family.  LOL... I wrote an article for the national Canadian newspaper about what it was like to grow up with my name in suburban New Jersey where most people were very Anglo and the ethnic groups were Italian or Jewish.  Also some Europeans but not too many Scandinavians.

The world has changed so much since then.  I live in a very, very multicultural city and no one laughs or makes fun of my name anymore because it sounds pretty normal compared to some of the very difficult Indian or Somalian (difficult to pronounce) names.

I saw our boy on a news clip the other night about some show on Thursday night that's featuring a bunch of stars and it made me feel weird like I don't want to watch him with all the movie stars.  I'm not really a stargazer but I make an exception once every four or five years wink

Love, S.

beach2 Hi Everyone!!  I'm so happy to be back!  It seems your latest update did the trick for me Bine because I can get on to your site again!!

Anyway, I just wanted to say on the subject of pronouncing Joaquin's name.  When I met him, I was very concerned about his name because I had heard more than once that although most people say "Wah-keen" it really is supposed to be pronounced with that "H" sound.  I spent the longest time practicing but even alone in my car, in the shower, at my computer..whereever, it always came out very awkward and unnatural sounding.  I made a point to listen very carefully to how his name was pronounced and it seemed to me that everyone, including his mother, pronounced his name "Wah-keen".

Even so, I was still very nervous when I actually spoke to him and didn't say his name until towards the very end of our conversation.  Then, I just went with "Wah-keen" like everyone else did.  Even though I heard him correct Oprah, it seems to me that in every other case it's been "Wah-keen".   Of course, if I had nerves of steel I suppose I could have just said "Hi Handsome!"  Maybe next time?  wink

Charlotte, that's very cool that you met him!  What were the circumstances.  Make me green with envy :-)

Re: the name, based on what I know of Spanish and my Spanish nephews' comments, I would say that it's most probably announced HO-WA-KEEN but then he goes by and nickname of WA-KEEN. Like everyone else here, I would either end up stuttering and screwing up his name anyway but apparently you didn't!  How did you meet him?

I've been trying to get an autograph for a month or so because my sister has a lot of Hollywood friends and one of them is going through the whole vegan community looking for somebody who knows him.  My sister tried to find his publicist but couldn't.

Ciao!  Sigrid

grin  I can imagine you Pattee!  grin

Actualy I think that it is not that important how his name should be pronounced. I am sure that it is pronounced wrongly. That it should be with H. But he himself uses Wah-keen. And that is important I think.

Ciao!  Sigrid

Hi Sigrid!  Sorry I didn't include more details of my meeting.  I didn't want to bore the other girls that have heard me tell it every chance I get.  I could just see their eyes all glazing over as they mutter..."ohhh no, someone stop her...there she goes AGAIN!!!"

I met him at a Peace Alliance Benefit a year and a half ago.  Here's a link to the details http://www.dearjoaquin.com/mainsite/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=845&Itemid=27.  I've been told it's worth the read but fix yourself a snack first!

To stay on topic....I said his name towards the end of the conversation, when I leaned in and asked him for a hug.  hug

Best of luck with your autograph, Sigrid!

loveflag Hey Stephanie, Mel & Jindra!!!  I'm so glad to be able to pop back in here!!  woohoo  Finally my computer and the site seem to be getting along again!   hug

Mr. Phoenix, Stephanie?  bow  Oddly enough that didn't cross my mind!  Must be too many daydreams inwhich I've never considered calling him Mr. Phoenix.  And if that's the case, I guess I'm just lucky I didn't call him Max  twinky
