I really like the name Joaquin. I always tease my husband that if we have another kid that we would name it Joaquin or Joaquina for a girl. So far he is not going for it.
I laugh at the thought that Joaquin lived in Mexico for a time and would introduce himself as "Leaf" but in Spanish. He couldn't remember the Spanish word for Leaf and would make the mistake of saying "garlic" instead. His given name is Spanish and the locals would know how to pronounce it correctly which was difficult for Americans. He was cute as Leaf but as a grown man, he looks like Joaquin; strong and sexy.

The name story is really interesting. I still don't understand why it's pronounced WA-KEEN. I took five years of Spanish in school -- admittedly, a long time ago! -- but usually the "J" is silent but all other vowels and consonants are pronounced. For example, in the name José, we pronounce it HO-ZAY. So why wouldn't it be HO-WA-KEEN? Not saying that would sound right but it would make more sense based on the Spanish that I learned.
Also, I grew up with an unusual name and spent my whole entire life spelling it for people so I can relate to Joaquin's dilemma about that. Not only did I have to spell it but then people would tease me -- in high school I was called cigarette and cigar and in university and college it was Sigmund for Freud. Many times I thought about changing my name and wished to hell that I had been named Susan, but then I grew into it.

Kids can be cruel in High School. I think Sigrid sounds mysterious and attractive. You may be right about the HO-WA-KEEN. In an interview with Oprah she asked Joaquin how to pronouce his name. He said to say the J as an H.

Hi Sab! He really said that on Oprah? That's amazing. Everywhere I read that it's supposed to be pronounced WA-KEEN but I have to wonder if maybe that's a nickname or his parents shortened it for him due to the hopelessness of the Americans trying to pronounce it correctly. I don't know -- could be wrong but *everything* that I know about the Spanish language tells me that that initial "Jo" part should not be ignored. It's not silent.
Anyway, I'm on a mission. Did I ever tell you that my sister worked in Hollywood for 20 years? She worked for Spelling Television -- Aaron Spelling and Duke Vincent of 90210, Melrose Place and Charmed. She also worked for Bill Bixby in all the Incredible Hulk movies and Dennis Miller and I have signed autographs from all these people on my wall. My sister's not working right now but she's got lots of movie star friends so I sent out some bulletins tonight asking them if anyone knew anyone who knew anyone who knew anyone who knew anyone... who knew Joaquin!!! Her friend Lydia wrote back saying that a friend of hers is a vegan and mentioned recently that JP was on the cover of a vegetarian magazine. If Lydia's friend knows him personally, I will try to get an autograph, although that will make me feel ridiculous and teenagerish!!! And he probably has great disdain for crazy middle-aged women who want him to sign his name to a photograph they can drool on but who cares? I don't even know if Lydia can do it but she'll try. Lydia is very cool. She runs a progressive talk radio program with a guy who's name escapes me at the moment but they just had John Edwards on. Also Lydia has been on Curb your Enthusiasm with Larry David so she flies with the big birds. Keep your fingers crossed for me! Will keep you posted.

PS My friends were only teasing me in high school. No one was ever mean about it. They were just kidding but I really grew to hate my name then. Now I think it's great because it's like Madonna or Sting -- all I have to do is say my first name and everyone remembers me. My last name is irrelevant because no one knows any other Sigrids! |

I can't believe you're posting on my board???  Hehehe, glad you do.
Well, first of all - I watched a few DVD extras...Village or something like that...to hear how the other actors or the director pronounce his name and imo it comes close to a mix of HO-WAKEEN and WAKEEN. I think it will never matter to me cause if I met him there was only an "oh...oh...ohhhhhh" from me and my jaw opening and closing like an epileptic fish....
I know more Sigrids! In Germany it's a common name. It's a Nordic name. Comes from "Sieg" (victory) and "firðr" (beautiful). I was sitting besides my friend Sigrid in elementary school! 
My name Sabine comes from "Sabina". It means "religious widow" and I'm definitely NOT pleased about that....  And also I'm not pleased about the fact that I went to school (and I don't mean the school - I mean the grade!) with 6 (!!!!) other Sabines. So there's nothing exotic about my name over here in Germany... My parents never gave me an answer when I asked them what the hell they were thinking of when they gave me that name.
Fingers crossed for you cause of the autograph. I think there's nothing wrong about the desire to posess a sheet of paper that already was held by THE man...
I can't wait for your reply on my lunchbreak-eating-letter.....
