Most people (like myself once) do not realise the extent of animal testing that still goes on for beauty products. This very helpful site explains very clearly what companies to avoid if you want to buy priducts that are not tested on animals.
In the UK, testing on makeup was banned I think in 1986. I like many others I breathed a sigh of relief but have since discovered that only the finished product is banned from being tested. The ingredients that make it up are still tested on animals. The same goes for perfumes/lotions/shampoo's/soaps etc.
If you want to lead a lifestyle that doesn't use products that are tested on animals, then Naturewatch is the place to start. Its very helpful and publish a handy size book - THE COMPASSIONATE SHOPPING GUIDE to carry around with you to check on whilst shopping.
Naturewatch have led many successful campaigns to get large organisations to change their ways, Marks and Spencer's being a recent convert to Non animal testing of cosmestics and beauty products.
Asda has also started a range that say they are against animal testing and are funding alternatives.
The Body Shop used to be a Naturewatch shop that was recommended but since they were sold out to L'Oreal, they no longer can claim to be part of an animal friendly organisation.
I myself have stopped using their products.
