In a world filled with tragedies, accidents and surprises, one of the most terrible is the death of a child. Grief rushes in, followed by a visceral need to fix blame.
At the close of a beautiful summer day near a quiet Connecticut town the Learner family – Ethan (Joaquin Phoenix) and Grace (Jennifer Connelly), their children Josh and Emma – stop at a gas station on their way home. Josh Learner, lost in a 10-year-old's private world, is standing at the edge of the road when a car comes racing around the bend. He is hit and instantly killed. The hit-and-run driver is a small-town lawyer named Dwight Arno (Mark Ruffalo), a man in desperate need of a second chance. Now Dwight must decide whether to run from his crime or pay the price for what he did.
Directed by Oscar-nominated Terry George (Hotel Rwanda), the film explores how the tragedy wears on people in unexpected ways.
