The Star Interview With Joaquin
INTERVIEW

Oscar nods freed Joaquin Phoenix
No longer has to explain what went through his mind when playing characters on big screenSep 14, 2007 04:30 AM

Movie Critic
"I'm probably going to let you down with this answer," says Joaquin Phoenix about his non-answer to a question about how one summons the emotional resources to play a man driven to the verge of madness by the loss of a child, which he does in last night's TIFF gala Reservation Road.
Due in theatres next month and directed by Hotel Rwanda's Terry George, the new movie casts Phoenix as a university professor unhinged by the tragedy.
Jennifer Connelly appears as his wife – a woman who comes to adopt a very different way of responding to what has occurred. Mark Ruffalo plays the man responsible for the deed.
"Not that anybody will care what I say ... but there's a chance that what I say will affect the experience of seeing the movie," says Phoenix, in town for the festival. "And I want to give the film a fair chance."
And that's a fair answer to not answering, but it makes for a challenging interview. If an actor doesn't want to talk about acting – which the twice Oscar-nominated (for Gladiator and Walk the Line) actor is clearly reluctant to do – and neither of us really cares to talk about his private life, what is one going to talk about?
Fortunately, Phoenix is willing to talk at length about why he doesn't like to talk about acting. "If you're sitting in the theatre and wondering what an actor did to come up with a performance, or what personal experiences contributed to that performance," Phoenix says, "you're not in the movie. Hopefully, you should just be lost in that experience."
Perhaps. But movies don't just happen. They're assembled out of carefully made parts – like an actor's performance.
"I'm going to be frank with you," he says, shifting sideways in his chair, admitting that in the past he probably talked about how certain roles might have been affected by his personal life.
"But, to be honest ... there is no effect on your real life. And if I said so in the past, I was probably only trying to get nominated."
And since, after being nominated twice for Oscars, it's no longer an issue?
"And now that that's done," he laughs. "I can finally be honest." _________________
