Making a statement
It started as a phrase on a T-shirt. Now "To Write Love On Her Arms" is a group devoted to helping youths raise awareness of depression, suicide, injury and addiction

Annie Dimitras recently began a To Write Love on Her Arms club at Bella Vista High School. The club educates about the realities of suicide, depression, self-injury and addiction.
Jamie Tworkowski discovered an unexpected answer to the pressing problem of teenage depression and pain. He began a nonprofit that advocates love -- To Write Love on Her Arms, or TWLOHA.
The organization began with a girl named Renee who struggled with depression, addiction, self-injury and suicidal thoughts, Jamie explains on the group's Web site. Jamie, then 26 and living in Orlando, Fla., raised money for her rehab by printing T-shirts that bore the phrase "To Write Love on Her Arms" -- inspired by actor Joaquin Phoenix's habit of scribbling his thoughts and notes across his arm. Whatever was on Phoenix's mind was in plain view for all to see.
Love was on Jamie's mind, and he was not afraid to let that be known. Jamie sold TWLOHA shirts to pay for Renee's rehab, and it soon became much more than that. Though unaware of it at the time, Jamie had unleashed a movement.
The shirts caught on.
Soon bands began wearing TWLOHA shirts while playing shows and doing photo shoots. This led to the exposure of young indie fans to To Write Love On Her Arms. In turn, kids started buying the shirts. TWLOHA's MySpace page became flooded with messages and comments -- some sharing life stories, some begging for help.
"I printed a few dozen black T-shirts in hopes of helping to pay for her treatment expenses. I had no idea that it would offer hope to thousands, or that it would become a nonprofit movement," shares Jamie on www.twloha.com.
TWLOHA banners can be found all over MySpace and the shirts are seen all over the indie and hardcore music scene. In August, TWLOHA won the MySpace Impact Award for Community Building. Thousands voted and MySpace is donating $10,000 to the movement.
In less than two years, TWLOHA has accumulated substantial support and has made ambitious goals. To Write Love On Her Arms' 2007 plan includes a $100,000 fund raised through T-shirt sales and donations.
One-hundred percent of the $100,000 fund will go directly to the treatment, recovery, and support of kids facing depression, addiction and self-injury, according to TWLOHA.
Earlier this year, TWLOHA went on tour with bands such as Anberlin, Bayside and Meg & Dia. The tour, deemed the "Stop the Bleeding Tour," raises awareness through music.
In January, March and April, the TWLOHA team headed to India and Australia to discover how the needs of the people in those countries could better be met. This past summer, TWLOHA staff went on the popular Vans Warped Tour circuit to help everyone there to learn that "rescue is possible."
The remarkable story of Jamie and To Write Love On Her Arms confirms that one person can have an impact on the world, even a young one. _________________
