411 Movies Roundtable: October 2007 (Part II)
Posted by Chad Webb on 10.02.2007

The staffers voice their opinions on more October releases like Rendition, Saw IV, and Gone Baby Gone!

October 12th

We Own the Night
Director: James Gray
Stars: Joaquin Phoenix, Mark Wahlberg, Eva Mendes
The Plot: Though nightclub owner Bobby (Phoenix) and his police officer brother Joseph (Wahlberg) haven taken decidedly different paths in life, a near-fatal incident causes them to unite in a deadly confrontation with the mobsters who run Bobby's club.

Lee: The cast alone makes me want to see this. It could very well be like The Departed. Maybe not, but the potential is there. I will be there either way.

Brimfield: The inspired casting of Phoenix and Wahlberg as brothers should prove to be the lynchpin of this film, and mobsters rarely fail to add to a movie's fun factor. Should be good.

Cusson: While this looks it could be a bit Departedish, Phoenix and Wahlberg together sounds intriguing.

Moser: It's right up Wahlberg's alley, so I suppose there could be worse things to watch. I'm still not going until I get a review from someone I trust.

Cory Lynn Schibler: As I said above, I'm totally there. This looks to be a great film, equal parts The Departed and some other film that has these elements. Great cast, what looks to be a great story, and it looks like we have a winner on our hands.

Furious: The trailer looked terrific. Joaquin Phoenix is the centerpiece and he's a fine actor that's capable of playing both sides of the fence. Robert Duvall is always good. Wahlberg is as good as his support and everyone else is great so he should be on form. Eva Mendes is getting better. It has real potential. Whether that actually comes across or this ends up as a Scorsese-lite picture is how well the relatively inexperienced James Gray handles the project. I'm hopeful from what I've seen that this will be entertaining.

Jason Chamberlain This sounds like it has potential.

Mike Gorman Familiar territory but might rise above the rest if Phoenix and Wahlberg can hit their marks.

Kristopowitz: Wow, according to the commercials I've seen, it's like the Oscar caliber non-comedy version of "Johnny Dangerously." I think the biggest potential problem here is Eva Mendes, because while she's very nice to look at, I don't think it's been proven definitively that she can act. Phoenix, Wahlberg, and Duvall are going to have to work double time if that's the case.

Nick Wallander I like Phoenix. I like Wahlberg. However Eva Mendes does nothing for me. Also the preview makes it look like they are trying too hard on this one. Is that possible?

Webb: Yes it does resemble The Departed at first glance, but it that such a bad thing. I could think of worse movies to emulate. James Gray reunites with some buddies here, and I'll bet it is average at best.

i can't get the stupid link to work right....oh well...it came from 411mania.com

anyway, it annoys me that wotn is being so compared to the departed.  i've seen the departed and haven't seen wotn, granted, but what's the deal?  the departed wasn't about brothers...

I also canīt understand why they compare it with The Departed. I saw The Departed and I liked it very much, but in my opinion it was shot with a kind of exaggeration. And it is not the case of WOTN.
