5 Questions: Joaquin Phoenix
www.vh1.com

The serious star of Reservation Road is really the class clown. No, really.
by Jeff Wilser

Joaquin Phoenix has a secret. He's a really funny guy, but he's never in any funny movies. Never. Walk the Line, Gladiator, Ladder 49: not exactly gut-busters. But when he enters the room, he's a non-stop laugh machine, cracking jokes and lobbing f-bombs. After We Own the Night, the not-funniness continues with Reservation Road, a bleak, sober film about losing a child and seeking revenge. Phoenix talks with VH1 about why it's okay to goof off, his thoughts on "method acting," and why Casey Affleck is a better actor than he is.

VH1: You're a serious actor in a serious movie . . . but you're a natural jokester. So what's it like on set?
Joaquin Phoenix: You're in an awkward position when you're asked that. You don't want it to affect people's experience watching the film. I wouldn't want somebody to go, "I know that after he did that crying scene, he actually watched Father Ted for two hours and laughed his ass off." So I'm reluctant to say. But the truth is . . . yeah, I completely f*ck off. And there were a lot of laughs. There was some fun. And part of it was Terry [director Terry George]. On the second day he came in and said, "I don't want any more f*cking crying!"

VH1: So you don't believe in "method acting" and all that?
JP: For me, you hold on to it for as long as you're shooting the scene. But there are times where you just completely f*ck off and joke around. There's this weird thing about this "serious acting" thing. I think it's really bullsh*t. I think that all that matters is the final product. If you get there by laughing with somebody, or you get there because you are the character -- you have them call you by the character's name -- whatever it may be, it doesn't matter to me.

VH1: You directed some music videos for People in the Planes and Ringside. Do you have that directing bug?
JP: Oh no, no. Let's not. I think it's a treacherously difficult job. I want nothing to do with it. I lack the patience, diplomacy, talent, and intellect to be a director. I wouldn't want to do it.

VH1: What do you watch just for fun?
JP: I'm not saying. [Laughs] I watch really bad movies. You know what's terrible? I'm so ashamed. I watched Kid Nation . . . and I really liked it. But I can't bring myself to watch it anymore. I grew up on The Three Stooges and Saturday Night Live, like the best of Dan Aykroyd. I had this VHS tape of Dan Aykroyd, and it was so worn down, because I just sat there and watched it all the time.

VH1: And these days? Who do you like to watch?
JP: I know I'm biased, because he's my brother-in-law and he's been my friend for years, but f*cking Casey Affleck's work in The Assassination of Jesse James is unbelievable. It was inspiring and exciting. It's a story of perseverance. He had a lot of extra baggage that worked against him. It's not only being related to Ben, but it's his friends. Matt Damon is one of his best friends. But the truth is, that f*cker could do everything that we've done . . . but better. I guarantee you, he could kill the Bourne series, he could have done Walk the Line walking backwards. [Laughs]
