Gray's new film shows his softer side
Just call James Gray the patron saint of New York moviemaking.
The director of We Own the Night, now in theaters, is starting his fourth film, Two Lovers, on Nov. 5. And like his other three, it's set and shot in Gotham. This time, though, Gray tackles a more tender subject matter: love.
"It's a small and rather beautiful romance between Joaquin Phoenix and Gwyneth Paltrow. It has nothing to do with this — no shootouts," he says.
How did he get Paltrow, who doesn't work much, to sign on? "I said to her, 'Will you come do this with me and Joaquin?' And she said for me to send her the script: 'I don't know, Apple has school in the fall.' I sent her the script, and she liked it," says Gray.
Phoenix proved an easier get. He plays a bad boy in Night and is pals with Gray.
Rest assured that Gray isn't treading into Garry Marshall romantic-comedy territory. His movie will have a twist. "Now, I don't want to ruin the ending. We'll find out. It's more complicated, as life is."
