The Sunday Mirror has this nice interview, some we know, some we don't!

Interrogation: Joaquin Phoenix
The Hollywood actor, 33, on being a bit unlucky in love, hating the showbiz scene, being brought up without a TV, and not being ready to settle down quite yet
by John Parrish 09/12/2007
You star in the new film We Own The Night with Mark Wahlberg – what’s he like to work with?
Joaquin Phoenix: He’s gorgeous to look at. He’s really hard working, which is a quality I really value in people. He always surprises me. I remember doing a scene with him, and the director suddenly gave him new lines as we were about to walk on set. I was sweating and panicking, ‘How am I gonna say this?’ But Mark was so comfortable. He f**king nailed the scene. It was unbelievable. There’s just something totally unpretentious about him.
Did you enjoy the romantic scenes with Eva Mendes?
JP: Well, I asked for 70 takes, but she said, ‘No, we’re done, that’s it.’ And that was halfway through the first take. What more can I say? I would have liked to have experienced it more.
Did Eva attract a lot of attention while she was on set?
JP: Yeah. In one scene we were in the street in a car talking, and I looked up and saw loads of dudes watching Eva. Then they started taking pictures of her while she’s acting out this intense scene with me. But she was such a pro and ignored them. They were desperate for a glimpse of her.
You were Oscar-nominated for Gladiator and Walk The Line. Are you gutted you didn’t win?
JP: I still have a lot to accomplish, so I don’t like to comment on the thought of actually taking an Oscar home. In Gladiator it was really about Russell Crowe, who carried the film. I didn’t really have to do much. Besides, I was out of the country when the film came out, so I missed all the hype.
AdvertisementDo you party hard?
JP: No, it’s not my scene. I don’t think I have a scene. When I was in my 20s, I went to parties, but it’s all changed now. I just think they’re awful. I don’t like being in an enclosed place with really loud music and a lot of drunk people. Those guys are there until like five in the morning, and then back the next day. It just seems like a miserable life to me.
How do you relax?
JP: I watch TV. There are a few channels I flip through – History, Discovery and National Geographic. I seriously like to do nothing. It’s terrible, because no one ever believes me.
Is it true that you didn’t have a TV growing up?
JP: We never had TV or video games or anything like that. We had to rely on our imagination to entertain ourselves. My parents were kind of hippies. They gave us all earthy names – Rain, Liberty, Summer and River. We were always creating characters and acting out little plays. But I really don’t know how it happened that we all became actors.
Who nicknamed you Leaf when you were younger?
JP: Me. I was born Joaquin, but nobody understood what I was saying when I was a kid. They would ask me my name and I’d say, ‘Joaquin,’ and they would say, ‘Walking?’ So it became a little frustrating. I changed my name to something more generic. I thought it would be easier for people to understand me. Then I changed it back to Joaquin when I was older.
Do you like being famous?
JP: I think I’m very fortunate, because my life doesn’t seem to be very appealing to the press. There is a bulls**t side to Hollywood. I never read any gossip magazines or watch entertainment shows. Don’t get me wrong, I try desperately to date attractive actresses, but they all turn me down. So that’s why I don’t end up as front page news.
When do you think you will stop acting, if at all?
JP: Maybe in a few years when I feel drained. I often question whether I want to continue with what I’m doing. There are times when I’m not sure it’s working for me. But on the other hand it’s hard to give up making movies when you get lots of zeros on your paycheck.
Is that why you became an actor?
JP: When I was eight years old, it kind of just happened. My brother, River, was working on a TV series and they needed a guest starring spot for a young boy and a young girl, so my sister and I did it. It wasn’t until I was 19 and did To Die For that I realised just how exciting it all was.
You have an extended Hollywood family. Your brother-in-law is Ben Affleck’s brother, Casey. Do you all get together for family gatherings?
JP: Ah, the Phoenix-Affleck parties. No, we don’t get together for parties – it’s more like I go over and visit my sister Summer, my nephew and my brother-in-law. But we’ll all be spending Christmas together.
Does being an uncle make you feel broody?
JP: It’s the next best thing to having one of my own. But they stole my favourite kid’s name. I’d always told Summer that if I had a kid I’d name it Indiana, and she took it from me.
When do you plan to have kids?
JP: I don’t know about that. I haven’t come up with any other names. That was the one I’d been sitting on for quite some time. To be honest, I still feel married to my work and I don’t really think I could be a good husband or father right now.
Have you ever cooked a proper Christmas dinner?
JP: Are you kidding? Ha ha! I wouldn’t even know how to pluck a turkey. I leave that to the other family members.
Do you like to watch yourself on screen?
JP: No. I am not a huge fan of myself.
Do you get recognised in the street?
JP: Occasionally I get stopped. I’m always mistaken for other actors. I’m not kidding you. I once did this Vanity Fair cover shoot with about 10 other actors. Then one night after a party this guy chased me down the street holding the magazine. I kept saying, ‘No, you’re mistaking me for somebody else. No, I don’t want to sign.’ He said, ‘You’re the only one who hasn’t signed.’ So I said, ‘Oh God, I feel terrible. OK, where do I sign?’ I go to sign my name by my picture and he goes, ‘No, no, Mr Maguire, you’re on the next page.’
Do you have a hobby?
JP: I know this might sound weird or crazy, but I like to spend a lot of time on my own in the woods. It’s not that I sneak off in the middle of the night, but I like the alone time where no-one can reach me.
Have you ever been starstuck?
JP: I made a film called Ladder 49 with John Travolta. I remember feeling a little intimidated at first, because I’ve always been such a big fan of his. When I was small, my mum worked at NBC (the American television network) and she got me his autograph. That’s how much I looked up to him.
Do you have any phobias?
JP: I’m still scared of heights. I don’t know if I’ll ever overcome that one.
What’s your guilty pleasure?
JP: I smoke too much. But, to be honest, it probably prevents me from doing other bad things.
What’s your pet hate?
JP: I’m usually annoyed by people’s behaviour when I’m out. I don’t like to be bothered too much. I prefer to keep a low profile. Fly under the radar, kind of thing.
Would you change your appearance for a movie role?
JP: Sure, I gained a lot of weight, I don’t know how much, but it was a lot, for Commodus (the teenage Emperor) in Gladiator. I piss people off when I’m in character in between shooting scenes, but acting takes precedent.
JOAQUIN’S REALITY CHECK
When was the last time you travelled on public transport?
I’m no snob. I was in New York recently and I rode the subway. I’m not one of those actors who has a limo taking me everywhere, although it would be nice.
What was the first thing you did this morning?
Looked in the mirror and went, ‘Arrghh!’
How much does a loaf of bread cost?
White, sourdough or rye? Is it organic? Like £5 depending on its size. I don’t know. [About £1]
We Own The Night is out in cinemas on 14 December
glad to see Joaquin not ready to be a husband or father yet!!!! _________________

I thought most of his family were Vegan/Vegetarian. So why would they cook turkey for the holiday? Joaquin does confuse me sometimes. That was a great interview. _________________

He confuses me too, but I guess that's why he's so intriguing (d/k how to spell) to me! Probably, the siblings spouses or his step-father eats meat?
Good article, btw, Karen, thanks for sharing!!! Reba _________________

I think he just doesn't shove it down everyone's throat that he is Vegan. Cute. _________________

Thanks Karen!!
I love that he didn't how much a loaf of bread costs in England. Me neither though.....
And oh please, he can't tell me he goes off into the woods by himself.
He is much too social. But I will say, he can pitch a tent with me anytime. _________________
