Joaquin Phoenix slams Oscars

Jan 6, 2008, 11:30 GMT

Joaquin Phoenix thinks the Oscars are all about money.

The 33-year-old actor believes the Academy Awards are too political, and is convinced the winners are decided by who has the most money behind them, not the quality of the performance.

He said: "The Oscars are a little bit like politics. It's the money behind you, the machine behind you, that's really effective. There are a lot of brilliant performances that don't even get a mention."

Joaquin is a two-time Oscar nominee. He was up for Best Actor in a Supporting Role in 2001 for his performance in 'Gladiator', and was named in the Best Actor category in 2006 for his portrayal of legendary musician Johnny Cash in 'Walk the Line'.

Joaquin recently admitted he hated being famous.

The 'We Own the Night' actor says he wishes he wasn't a celebrity and "pities" other stars who have to put up with more attention than he does.

He said: "I've been in the business since I was young but I was very naive about fame, I didn't really know what I was getting into as an actor.

"I think I have a fairly good level of fame, but truthfully I'd rather not have any. I pity some people who get really hounded."

Oh - it's all about the money, honey... grin

I think he is right about the "Politics" and money.
By saying it though, I'm not sure it will help his chances of winning one!  But I like his honesty!

I think he's right what he said, it is quite predictable who usually wins, but i have to agree with Lola, it probably wont do his chances any good, they donn't like people spreaking the truth, only people who suck up. On the other hand may be he's said it for a reason.

Thank you for the Articule Bine very good reading  welldone

I am in agreement with everyone here. Hollywood is like high school and Joaquin is the cool kid that everyone knows and likes but stays away from the snobs.

The one award that really matters Joaquin received from us, his true fans...People's Choice. Don't yah think? I know its a b*tch for him being in the limelight. But it is, what it is. At least he's been able to keep it to a low roar for himself and his family.
