Norfolk, Va. - Animated TV sitcom character Lisa Simpson did it. So did Walk the Line child stars Hailey Anne Nelson and Ridge Canipe and Oscar-nominated actor Joaquin Phoenix. They all went vegetarian at a young age, and their vibrant health is testimony to the wisdom of that decision. But you don't have to be famous to know that kicking the meat habit--at any age--is the best thing you can do for your health, for animals, and for the environment. So PETA's headline-grabbing, annual Sexiest Vegetarian Alive contest is spinning off the first-ever Cutest Vegetarian Kid contest at PETAKids.com. One lucky boy and one lucky girl will be chosen.
All that proud parents and grandparents have to do is send an uploaded photo along with a brief bio that includes the child's name, age--entrants must be 12 or younger--and city and state of residence as well as why the child went vegetarian. The contest ends October 1, and the winning boy and girl will be announced later in the month. The winners will also be announced in their hometown media and will be featured in a future issue of PETA's Animal Times. Each winner will also receive a basket packed full of kid- and animal-friendly goodies.
Why are vegetarian kids cuter? One reason is the childhood obesity epidemic. On average, vegetarians are significantly trimmer than meat-eaters, and there's nothing "cute" about watching your kid bulge at the waistline or grow a double chin. In addition to suffering from the social difficulties of childhood obesity--which can cause lifelong psychological trauma--children fed a diet of saturated fat- and cholesterol-laden burgers, nuggets, and hot dogs show symptoms of heart disease by the time they reach first grade.
"It's a fact: Vegetarian kids are cuter because they're healthier and because they're not needlessly contributing to animal suffering," says PETA Vice President Bruce Friedrich. "Parents who rear their kids vegetarian are giving them a gift that will pay benefits for decades to come."

Thank you for this. Just few days before I read in one czech Newspaper, that Czech ministry of education wants to make new rulles about eating in schools. They want to lower amount of meat and cook healthier meals. I have read discussions under this article. Better donīt repeat how rude people were. They also believe, that the ministry wants to kill their children by lowering meat portions. Do you understand how stupid some people can be? Nowone wants to make vegetarians from those children, they just want to learn them how to eat healthier. _________________

Thanks for posting the article, Lori.
Studies say that it's possible to raise children vegetarian without any problems but in my opinion you shouldn't force a child to go vegetarian. If it's the child's choice it's okay but I don't like the phrase in that article: "...and there's nothing "cute" about watching your kid bulge at the waistline or grow a double chin.." ehrm, not every child who eats meat is overweighted. And I bet not every vegetarian child is cute...(uuhhh, some will beat me up for this sentence).
The following is not about vegetarian eating but also I think it's not really off-topic:
What I think was a good thing that Jamie Oliver did some time ago. I watched it on TV last year. Still he fights the war against Junkfood at schools in Britain. Who is interested might read this:
Jamie's School Dinners
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Last year Jamie Oliver tackled the shameful state of school dinners in one of the most acclaimed TV series ever.
Kids were eating piles of processed junk and recoiled at the sight of fresh vegetables. And the terrible diet was leading to a health time-bomb, with soaring rates of obesity and hugely increased risks of heart disease and other life-threatening conditions for Britain's children.
So Jamie took over school meals in Greenwich and tried to persuade the Government to improve standards. With dinner lady Nora Sands he showed that kids could be fed fresh, nutritious meals. And after a huge campaign, newspaper headlines and delivering a 300,000-signature petition, Tony Blair agreed to set new standards for school meals, and committed Ģ280 million for proper ingredients, equipment and training.
A year on, Jamie wanted to go back to see how much better things were. Surely with all that money and new guidelines, the dinner ladies' lives would be much easier and the kids would be happily tucking into healthy grub?
But as he starts to unravel the finances and see the reality of the changes through the eyes of dinner ladies, kids and parents, Jamie begins to realise that they may have won the battle, but there is still a war to be fought.

Thank you Sabine for this. I have also seen this. I think that Jamie Oliver is great guy. He use his talent and luck in a good way. He does many useful and important things.
Back to vegetarianism. Sabine, I understand your feelings about the article. I donīt eat meat because I donīt want kill animals, but I donīt think that bit of meat time to time can make any harm. The problem is, that people eat too much of meat. I do believe that more and more people will go vegan or vegetarian, but I think that there always will be people who eat meat. Important is not to eat junkfood and treat animals like living and feeling creatures and not just like goods and things. _________________
