CHRISTOPHER WRIGHT - INDEPENDENT CANDIDATE
DEVONIAN PARLIAMENTARY ELECTION - WEDNESDAY 5TH DECEMBER 2007
MANIFESTO
Citizens of Devonia, it is my pleasure to present you with my very first election manifesto, for the very first election of the new, single-chamber Devonian Parliament. I am standing as an independent candidate, unconnected to any political party. Our nation is very newly-established, and therefore it is essential that a strong legal system is established as swiftly as possible, which is why my top priorities for this parliamentary term are to establish laws to protect citizens from attack, and to protect personal property. I want to take measures to safeguard our democracy for the future, whilst preserving our King's traditional role in government.
I am always open to new ideas and feedback from citizens, and you are welcome to contact me at any time at Kingdom Square or by Private Message; I will respond as quickly as I can! Let me know if you would like me to raise any issues in Parliament, or if you have any ideas on how the country should be run. I promise to be open and trustworthy with the public (honestly, I do!) and believe in constructive political debate, not just violent cross-party argument.
Below is a list of my current short-term and long-term policies. The short-term list covers where I stand on issues addressed now, and the long-term list covers what I hope to achieve over time. Thank you for reading my manifesto; I hope it will help you to make your decision on Election Day.
Christopher Wright
Short-term Policies - What I hope to achieve within the first six-month term.
I will work to establish basic laws to protect citizens from physical harm as a matter of urgency; Devonia is in its early days, and no legislation has yet outlawed murder, assault or rape. I will swiftly enter into discussions in Parliament towards the production of a Personal Protection Bill that would protect citizens from attack, and establish suitable punishments.
My second priority for this term will be property protection, to enforce sanctions against theft, burglary and fraud. This would also involve discussion with MPs to ensure that Devonia develops a strong, just legal system.
Earlier this year, the House of Lords and House of Commons were dissolved to form a unicameral Parliament. I wish to maintain this at least for this parliamentary term, as there are currently too few citizens to fill two comfortably-sized chambers.
For similar reasons, I will oppose any proposal to join any intermicronational organisation during this term. As we are still establishing our own political system, we are not yet ready to represent ourselves in an intermicronational political body.
On the other hand, I believe that we are ready to enter into relationships with other micronations, through treaties of mutual recognition or alliance, for example, which would make us better-known in the intermicronational community, and could pave the way for future involvement in an intermicronational organisation.
I believe that Devonian democracy should be safeguarded for the future. To do this, I will campaign for an act that would give the citizenry the right to a public referendum on any legislation passed by Parliament that would compromise their right to vote for representatives in Parliament, or that would transfer legislative authority, jurisdiction or sovereignty to any external authority.
I support the Monarch's current role in the political system, and believe that Parliament should continue to work in cooperation with the Crown, not against it. King Rafael has proven himself to have Devonia's best interests at heart, and a responsible monarch with a degree of involvement in politics can provide a degree of continuity as governments change.
Long-term Policies - What I hope to achieve in the future, or over a longer period of time.
I support the eventual restoration of a bicameral Parliament. This restoration would take place once the population, and political activity, has grown enough to make filling a second chamber practical, by reasonable judgement.
Once the Devonian political and legal systems are well-established, I think we should definitely consider joining an intermicronational organisation such as the United Micronations or the League of Secessionist States, but many such bodies exist, and such a move would require careful consideration. Should joining such an organisation involve transferring some jurisdiction or legislative authority, I would support the public's right to referendum.
So far, for obvious reasons, discussion on the Devonian forums has been mostly about Devonian politics. I would like to see Devonia becoming a friendly, flourishing community for citizens to discuss anything (within reason). Hopefully other conversation topics will surface naturally, once we are all free of election fever!
Thank you for reading my manifesto. If you have any questions, please free to contact me in Kingdom Square, or by Private Message. _________________ Christopher Wright MP
