Arrest made in Toronto shooting death of 11-year-old

Mon Jul 23, 6:38 AM

An arrest has been made in the weekend shooting death of 11-year-old Ephraim Brown, Toronto police told CBC News on Monday.

Police have not yet released any details about the arrest.

The boy was hit by a stray bullet early Sunday when two unnamed rival groups started shooting near a house hosting a birthday party, Chief Bill Blair said the same day at a press conference.

Brown died at the scene shortly after police responded to a call in the northwest end of Toronto near Sheppard Avenue and Jane Street at 1 a.m. ET.

Investigators said about 50 to 70 people were at the party. The boy's aunt, Ingrid Osborne, issued a tearful appeal to people who knew anything about the shooting to break their silence.

"We need you guys to come forward and give us some help," Osborne told reporters on Sunday. "Find the person who killed my nephew. He didn't deserve to die like that."

"I just don't understand how many innocent young lives you guys need to take in order for the community to step up," said Camisha Brown, the boy's sister.

Blair had urged members of the community to help police do their job, and not take matters into their own hands.

"I would ask the community to trust us, work with us, and allow us to identify the people that are responsible for this and not engage in retaliation."

A 21-year-old man was also injured in the shooting. He was treated for a gunshot wound to the leg, but police said he would not co-operate with them. He is not a suspect, police said.

Boy's death part of weekend shooting toll

The 11-year-old's death was one of four apparently unrelated gun killings in Toronto over the weekend.

Brown was once a schoolmate of 15-year-old Jordan Manners, who was fatally shot in the hallway of a high school in May.

Blair said the boy's killing also brings back memories of another tragedy involving gun violence on Toronto's streets.

On Boxing Day 2005, 15-year-old Jane Creba died when she was caught in the crossfire of rival gangs while shopping on Yonge Street.

Toronto Mayor David Miller said the latest rash of gun violence shows why Canada needs to toughen its gun laws, tighten border security and issue a complete ban on handguns.
