Intermittent Sonar Readings

Intermittent Sonar Readings

Postby bulletbob on Jun 9th, '08, 15:28

I'm having troubles with the sonar on my 07 model LMS-522C igps and 02 model X91. The 522c has a Navionics chip. The GPS on the 522 works fine. However, both units lose the depth reading (flash, lock-up or read a ridiculous depth) although the problem is more pronounced on the 522c. On the 522 this happens when the boat is at the dock or moving. The X91 reads correctly at the dock but occasionally loses the depth when underway. There is no discernable pattern and at different speeds and water chops conditions (from trolling to full throttle & every where in between) and at different motor trim and running positions sometimes they read the bottom other times they don't. The transducers are mounted about 3" apart on a 2002 Lund Pro V SE with a 100 hp Yamaha four stroke, are well underwater in a position not subject to boat or motor interference. They were mounted by a marine dealer. The units are located on the driver,s console in close proximity to each other. Both are wired to the battery with individual fuses located near the battery. The boat has a master power switch necessary to turn them on. The problem occurs whether one unit in on or both. Here's what I've tried with no success:
- Moving the angle of the transducers
- Tightening all connections multiple times at the battery and the units
- Checked the fuses at the battery
- Battery is fully charged
- Switching the transducers between the two units even though both transducers are clean and free of any cracks, etc
- Checked for visible pinched or cut wires
- Adjusting ping speed
- Adjusting sensitivity
- Adjusting noise suppression
- Other adjustments were also made and I also defaulted to the factory settings.
- Did a soft reboot
- Switching the load locations in the boat
- Running with different electrical systems on or off (bilge, livewell pumps)

I'm leaving for Lake of The Woods early Saturday morning & don't relish traversing the lake with intermittent sonar. Again, the problems occurs with both units (more prevelant with the 522), is intermittent and occurs regardless of which transducer I use.

I'm not certain what version software is on the 522 & perhaps downloading a newer version would help but I'm concerned with losing my trails and way points and since the problem also occurs on the X91 it does not appear that this would solve the problem.

Can you offer me any help or direct me to someone in Mpls who could help by Friday?
