Yet another of my faves! (I'm pretty sure it was called Contradictions anyway...) And again feel free to re-post from before. Basically for this thread it's any widely-accepted generalities that your syn contradicts. Like:
- Blues music is never blue. It's invariably some shade of red or orange.
Unfortunately that's all I can think of right now, but I know there are more. Do you have any contradictions? |

I liked this thread!
Blue is happiness, not sadness. |

I'm having some syn headaches at my new job at the zoo.
There are two types of hay to feed the animals with: alfalfa and timothy. Apparently there's an important difference, I wouldn't know. Anyway, some animals get alfalfa and some get timothy. My color for the word "timothy", I should mention, is green, while "alfalfa" is yellow.
I'm not very good at telling them apart yet, but they are slightly different colors. Right, timothy is yellowish, and alfalfa is greenish. |

Not sure if this really counts for this thread...
The word ardent means enthusiastic, passionate, having a lot of feeling. But the dark green "ar" sound and yellow "dent" just DOESN'T fit at all! It was one of my vocab words and i had such trouble remembering it because it sounds/feels like it means difficult and hard. |

The smell of cut grass isn't green. It's more yellowish-silver. |

Most of my color words are contradictions. "Yellow" is yellow, though. |

Well, yesterday I had a pretty embarrassing moment because of syn contradictions. A little message flashed on my computer letting me know that the printer was low on cyan colored ink. I opened up the compartment and took out the yellow cartridge because cyan is obviously yellow as anyone can tell from looking at the word "cyan". So I trotted on down to Staples and handed the cartridge to the guy and said "I need a new cyan cartridge, please." He took it from me and said "So, you need cyan and yellow?" As he said this it dawned on me that I actually didn't know what color cyan was and I was experiencing a syn contradiction moment. I would have felt silly explaining it to him so I just said "Yes, give me both."
(BTW, cyan is a bluish color). |

tonya: haha good story! Sounds like a situation I would get into even without the syn confusion!
Yellow is yellow from the E...but then black at the end.
Green is kind of whiny sounding and it has too much yellow...but still manages to be green.
Two is bold blue but 2 can take on some different colors layered - blue, light pink, and yellow.
Black has yellow smack in the middle.
Gray also has yellow. |

I have to agree with you there! c and y are both yellow for me.
Another contradiction which never ceases to confuse me - left is green (with teal/black) (versus right which is yellow and pink), and east is green (versus west which is light blue). I always get east and west the wrong way around because I always feel like east should be on the left. |

The one thing I'm never going to remember easily--in sailing, port is red and starboard is green. My brain says that logically it should be the opposite (because the word port is green, obviously, and the word right is reddish. ) |

East is yellow.
West is fairly green but not much.
South is blue but a sort of blue that I can't pin down.
North is red, but kind of white at the same time.
I'm not so sure about north and south, but I'm sure of east and west. |
