I've been wanting to tell you about this for ages, I'm so glad that now I can!
Anyway, a few weeks ago I went to a wine tasting evening (designed so that senior students wouldn't leave university, have dinner with potential employer/spouse/in-laws and embarrass themselves by not knowing what wine to order. ) Anyway, the guy who ran it was telling us about how the different wines have this flavour and that aroma (barnyard aromas? Seriously...). Everyone was smelling the wines and tasting them and nodding in agreement, then passing looks of complete confusion to each other. While I couldn't taste any barnyard aromas, I found that my taste - shape syn came in very handy. I was able to pick up the subtleties in the different types of wines and identify some of the less-obvious flavours.
Has anyone else found that their taste/smell syn has come in handy in a similar situation? |

That's really cool - I wish my syn would be more useful!
I've had the opposite experience, having recently had my first exposure to alcohol. What most people seem to describe as a 'warm sensation' I find spikey, harsh and more like a cold burning - it looks like grey static in my chest. I think this is touch rather than taste (I don't think I have taste syn), but it wasn't very pleasant! |

Ooh, that's cool, Emma!
My taste syn is pretty much nonexistent, and my smell syn isn't too useful, at least not that I've found. But you've given me a good idea for a cooking project I'm going to attempt (copying a sauce) -- I'll try to see if I can detect any separate color-scents. Thanks for the thought!
I can't taste a thing in wine, not the way I'm 'supposed' to anyway. All I can tell is if I like it or not. Since I'm not much of a wine person, I usually go for the sweeter flavors. Does sweet have a shape, Emma? |

This is so exciting! I'm so glad that I can talk about this sort of stuff again.

Sweet things are very round and usually a little shiny.
I find that I often use my syn to cook with. My Mum finds it quite strange that I'll smell or taste something and start muttering to myself about it not being spiky enough.

I actually don't drink much alcohol for a similar reason - it feels awful! I don't mind wine because the other flavours drown out the alcohol (and I think its fun to try to work out what kind of flavours it has in it from their shapes). |

Me too! Feels like home again.
You saying you use your syn to cook with...that gives me a lot of hope for my sauce-copying attempt! It'll be more challenging for me since it'll be all smells, and all colors (no shapes), but I'm all encouraged now. |

It sounds very cool that your syn can help you in tasting wines I don't like most strong alcohols too, but the feeling of wine is very pleasant, I can't say about synesthetic feel of it though. |

I can't taste subtle differences in most similar drinks or foods either (which leads to my argument that Pepsi and Coke taste the same!) but then most people can't either. I found it extremely funny when one of those current affair programs rustled up a bunch of Sydneians and tested whether they could tell the difference between bottled water and Sydney tap water (if anyone has had the 'pleasure' of drinking Sydney tap water you'd know it tastes pretty much like pool water. Oh, well it's heavily chlorinated) and none of them could! I suppose they're immune to the taste of it.
It's fantastic to have your taste-shape syn though. It's sound incredibly useful! |

I would be able to tell the difference between the two. I find that Pepsi is a lot rounder and larger than Coke, which has a funny pointy thing at the back. I am also very fussy about which brand of bottled water I drink because they all have slightly different textures and I hate the one that has a creamy texture. Yuck! I think my parents think I'm making it up though... |

Cool Ridge. And the Schweppes one is pretty nasty too. |

Thank you . I might see if I can find them in Safeway. I've never tasted them before, I'm not a big fan of bottled water, especially Mount Franklin (that doesn't come from Mount Franklin!). |

Wow! I am really picky about my water too! I feel like I rather die than drink tap water! My Husband thinks I'm a total loon. ( He's big on the free tap water.)
Tap water YUCK!
Bottled water is totally different! They all have different weights.
I don't think I have taste syn. though. |
