What would happen to my domain name if I used a free site and they later closed up the shop? Would that have an effect on my name...

possible. I say if anything...go with freewebs.com They will never go out of business. Granted the domain isn't free....but you can afford 10 dollars a year. Trust me..I've used freewebs for almost 5 years. Never had a single problem with em

Before you go for one of these free domain names find out from them if you can and if they are willing to give you a name that is active so that you can look it up in WHois. Most likely they will not allow that why because you will see that you do not actually own the name. It is registered to them through a proxy or private registration. If you would want to transfer your registration to another server/registrant they make it very difficlut. or just plain do not allow it.
OK on one of my sites we do offer a free domain name, but we do not register this name unless you have hosting with us for a year. (yes you get to keep your name no matter where you host after and you can transfer it. I don't push this site as I should.
There are many domain registrares that will cost you $10.00 or less for the year and many have free ad supported hosting and email with it.
Best thing to do is search today, search tomorrow, search for a week till your comfortable with what you find. (Don't forget to read the fine print)
