ARLINGTON, Va. — A Navy SEAL killed in Afghanistan will be awarded the Medal of Honor, according to the Navy.

Lt. Michael P. Murphy is the first U.S. service member to be awarded the Medal of Honor for service in Afghanistan, and the third to receive the award for service in the war on terrorism.

I am sorry that I am posting in this thread only now.

Sir is the bravest man I have ever heard of. His gallant leadership warrants more than just a medal even if it is the Medal of Honor.

His actions and that of SEAL Team 10 are the stuff of legends.

I first read of their exploits in Petty Officer 1st Class Marcus Luttrell (Navy Cross recipient)  recount of Operation Redwing in his book Lone Survivor.

Lt Murphy along with PO Luttrell, PO Axelson  and PO Dietz are reasons why when times are tough we need to harden up and fight on!

Congratulations Sir, may you Rest in Peace.

PO Axleson and PO Dietz; you fine gentleman also Rest In Peace; we owe you all so much.

"Never has so much been owed to so few"

- Prime Minister Sir Winston Churchill

Those who fought on Operation Redwing in the Afghan mountains on June 28, 2005. Petty Officers Dietz and Axelson where both awarded the Navy Cross posthumously in 2006; later that year Petty Officer Luttrell, the lone survivor was presented with his Navy Cross by President George W. Bush.

Lieutenant Mike Murphy USN (7 May 1976 - 28 June 2005)

Petty Officer Second Class Danny Dietz USN (26 January 1980 - 28 June 2005)

Petty Officer Second Class Mathew Axelson (25 June 1976 - June 28 2005)

Petty Officer First Class Marcus Luttrell USN

Outline of Operation Redwing

he SEAL team, lead by Lt. Michael P. Murphy and consisting of petty officers Matthew Axelson, Danny Dietz and Marcus Luttrell, was on a mission to try to find Ahmad Shah,a key Taliban leader, east of Asadabad. However, a goat herder stumbled upon the SEALs' hiding place and alerted local Taliban and Al Qaeda forces. They were surrounded by Taliban forces and a firefight ensued.

Even though they were pinned down, Lt. Murphy broke cover long enough to radio his base for back-up. In the process, he was shot in the stomach and back but he still managed to complete the transmission. The three remaining SEALs continued to fight off the Taliban, gravely wounded, protecting each other as their position was pushed back to lower ground. After two hours of fighting and taking out dozens of Taliban fighters each, only Luttrell remained alive.

In response to the call from Murphy to Bagram Air Base, an MH-47 Chinook helicopter carrying 8 US Navy SEALs and 8 Nightstalkers - members of the Army's elite 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment attempted to come to their rescue to provide extraction in the mountains of Kunar province, Afghanistan. Crew from the escort attack helicopters cited the SEALs on the ground as putting up outstanding resistance, calling it "an unbelievable firefight." The Chinook helicopter was shot down by what is believed to have been a rocket propelled grenade killing all sixteen on board.

Luttrell survived the battle after being located severely wounded by locals where for 5 days was kept alive and hidden from Taliban forces before being rescued by US Army Rangers.

You know,
I get asked sometimes why I "waste my time" running a discussion board based soley on honoring Military men or women who have given their lives fighting an "illegal war"?
To which I can only comment that it is because of men such as has been posted about above.
We owe these heroes more than we can ever repay just by doing what it is we do here.
Sometimes ity might seem pointless to some or even redundant but THANK GOD these men did not take the same attitude towards their obligation to duty.
Heros such as these deserve to be remembered and honored.
God knows the media won't do it so I'll accept the personal challenge to honor them the best way that we can.
I DON'T CARE if my name is never in lights or that anything is ever named after me.
That is NOT why I do this.
Any awards or accolaids that come as a result is not even a thought in my mind.
If they come fine..
If not that is fine as well.
I don't need to be rewarded for doing what is right.
The only rewards I need are the ones of getting to know each of you and the knowledge that we've done all we could to bring honor to those who deserve it.
