Helicopter Training Squadrons [HT]

Helicopter Training Squadron 8 [HT-8]
Naval Air Station Whiting Field, Milton, Florida

Established 3 Dec 1950
Redesignated HTG-1 Mar 1957
Redesignated HT-8 1 Jul 1960

The United States Navy's Helicopter Training Squadron Eight (HT-8), along with its sister squadron, HT-18, provides advanced helicopter flight instruction to all Navy, US Marine Corps, and US Coast Guard helicopter flight students as well as international students from several allied nations. Students who successfully complete the program earn the right to wear the coveted "Wings of Gold."

Helicopter Training Squadron EIGHT (HT-8), the Navy's oldest helicopter training squadron, is based aboard Naval Air Station Whiting Field, Milton, Florida. Spencer Field is HT-8's primary helicopter training site. HT-8's mission is to provide primary and advanced helicopter training for: US Navy, US Marine Corps, Coast Guard, and Allied student naval aviators.

The squadron was initially established at NAS Ellyson Field, Pensacola, Florida, as Helicopter Training Unit ONE (HTU-1) on Dec. 3, 1950. The squadron was redesignated Helicopter Training Group ONE in March 1957. Later HTU-1 became the eighth squadron in the Naval Air Basic Training Command in July 1960, when it was renamed Helicopter Training Squadron EIGHT (HT-8). In 1972, the squadron moved to South Whiting Field and was split to form HT-18, an advanced helicopter training squadron.

In January 1986, the TH-57B model replaced the TH-57A, an aircraft flown by the squadron for seventeen years. HT-8 currently utilizes both B and C models of the Bell TH-57 Sea Ranger.

In 1985 HT-8 underwent a major change. In October, HT-8 and its sister squadron HT-18 became "mirror image" squadrons. Both now instruct the same complete helicopter training syllabus. On 1 November 1985, HT-8 repeated history by winging its first student since moving to Whiting Field in 1972.

Currently sixty-four officers (39 Navy, 21 Marine, 3 Coast Guard and 1 Allied), 20 enlisted, and 4 civilians staff the squadron. HT-8's accomplishments in 1999 include: Flew over 42,372.5 hours; completed 17,662 sorties, including 4,137.3 night and 2,040.0 solo hours. Instructors maintained an average of 48.5 flight hours per month and 527.6 flight hours per year. HT-8 graduated 141 Navy, 90 Marine Corps, 15 Coast Guard, and 12 Allied student naval aviators. Aside from providing quality training for thousands of United States naval aviators, the squadron continues to train student naval flight surgeons as well as provide helicopter indoctrination flights for United States Naval Academy and Naval Reserve Officers' Training Corps (NROTC) midshipmen.

Helicopter Training Squadron 18 [HT-18]
"Mirror Image"
Naval Air Station Whiting Field, Milton, Florida

HT-18 Established 1 Mar 1972

Helicopter Training Squadron EIGHTEEN (HT-18) is home based at Naval Air Station Whiting Field, Milton, Florida. Organized as the Advanced Helicopter Training Squadron, HT-18 was established in 1972 to fulfill the increasing requirements for helicopter trained pilots in the expanding helicopter community of the Navy, Marine Corps, and Coast Guard. Additional duties assigned to the Squadron consists of providing rotary-wing training and designation to select members of various allied nations, refresher and transition training to fleet aviators and flight surgeons, and executive transportation for the Pensacola/Milton area. On October 7, 1985, HT-18 added Primary Helicopter Training to its advanced training syllabus and now provides all facets of helicopter flight training to Student Naval Aviators.

HT-18's primary mission is to transition Student Naval Aviators through basic and advanced rotary wing pilot training. Basic training introduces and develops student skills in helicopter flight maneuvers as well as training in visual flight rules, navigation, and tactics. Advanced training completes an intensive curriculum of basic and radio instruments, advanced tactics, and shipboard landings. The culmination of this exacting training syllabus results in a highly trained and proficient all-weather Naval Aviator.

The skill and dedication of HT-18's sixty-five officers, thirtyenlisted members, and three civilian employees insure that students receive only the highest caliber of instruction and support in pursuit of the coveted "Wings of Gold." While training helicopter pilots, HT-18 continues to amass more Class A mishap-free flight hours than any other squadron in military rotary wing aviation history.

Marine Helicopter Training Squadron-302 [HMT-302]
New River, NC

Mission

The mission of Marine Helicopter Training Squadron 302 (HMT-302) is to conduct combat capable helicopter flight training for all CH-53E Super Stallion Marine Corps pilots and aircrew. All basic, conversion and refresher pilots as well as aircrew receive assault support training in the CH-53E to prepare them for follow on assignment in the Fleet Marine Force.
http://www.2maw.usmc.mil/MAG26/hmt302/hmt302info/mission.asp

History

Marine Helicopter Training Squadron 302 was originally designated Marine Medium Helicopter Training Squadron 302 (HMMT-302), on 01 November 1966, at Marine Corps Air Facility, Santa Ana, California, and assigned to Marine Helicopter Training Group 30, 3d Marine Aircraft Wing. The squadron was tasked with training newly designated Naval Aviators and conversion pilots to fly the Boeing-Vertol CH-46 Sea Knight. Upon deactivation, the squadron had accumulated 34,850.7 flight hours without mishap.

On 31 March 1972, personnel from HMT-302 were merged with Marine Heavy Helicopter Training Squadron 301 (HMT-301), to form the newly designated Marine Helicopter Training Squadron 301 (HMT-301), conducting pilot training in the CH-46F and CH-53A helicopters. The restructured HMT-301 was attached to Marine Aircraft Group 16. In December 1983, the squadron began training CH-53E Replacement Aircrew (RAC), and later established the Fleet Readiness Aviation Maintenance Personnel (FRAMP) department to train CH-53E enlisted mechanics and technicians.

On 20 November 1987, the squadron was reactivated and designated Marine Helicopter Training Squadron 302(HMT-302) attached to Marine Aircraft Group 16 flying both the CH-53A and CH-53E helicopters. The FRAMP accompanied the helicopters to HMT-302 and in 1991, added the CH-53A/D to their curricula. On 22 October 1993, Naval Air Maintenance Training Group Detachments (NAMTRAGRUDETS) 1028 and 1032, TME-32, and FRAMP combined and reorganized into the Fleet Replacement Enlisted Skills Training (FREST) department.

In September of 1994, the squadron became the only Navy or Marine Squadron ever to fly three models of Sikorsky H-53 aircraft as it incorporated Navy MH-53E's from Helicopter Mine Countermeasures Squadron 12 (HM-12) and assumed the RAC and FREST training responsibilities for the Navy's MH-53E community. In June 1995, the squadron relinquished responsibility for the training of CH-53D aircrew and transferred four CH-53D aircraft to stand up HMT-301 in Hawaii.

Between 9 January and 23 January 1996, HMT-302 safely executed a transcontinental move to MCAS, New River, North Carolina. The transfer became effective in February 1996 when HMT-302 officially attached to MAG-29.

In March to April 1998, HMT-302 deployed to South Africa in support of Presidential Operations -- the first Fleet Replacement Squadron to deploy overseas for a real world military operation.

As of 4 March 2003, HMT-302 has surpassed 82710 Class A mishap-free flight hours in Sikorsky H-53 helicopters.

The squadron provides flight training for newly commissioned Naval Aviators, conversion pilots, refresher pilots, and enlisted aircrew in the CH-53E Super Stallion.

Marine Helicopter Training Squadron 302 unit awards consist of the Navy Unit Commendation, Meritorious Unit Commendation with one bronze star, and National Defense Streamer with one bronze star.

Marine Helicopter Training Squadron-302 [HMT-302]
Camp Pendleton, CA
http://www.3maw.usmc.mil/mag39/hmt303/default.asp

Marine Helicopter Training Squadron 303, "Atlas", was activated with four officers and three enlisted Marines on 30 April 1982. Today the squadron has grown to 597 Marines and Sailors and 39 aircraft.

Based at Marine Corps Air Station, Camp Pendleton, California, HMT-303 is a training squadron dedicated to producing AH-1W and UH-1N helicopter pilots and maintenance aircrew for the Marine Corps and Search & Rescue pilots for the Navy. Upon completion of the training syllabus, Marine Aviators and Aircrew are sent to deploying tactical squadrons. Navy SAR pilots go to various Naval Air Stations throughout the continental United States and Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. Replacement aircrew arrive from NAS Whiting Field as newly designated Naval Aviators. Enlisted aircrew report from all over the world to begin training in their specialty field.

The squadron conducts an extensive training syllabus to include:

Familiarization
Navigation
Ordnance
Terrain
Formation
Instrument
Night vision goggle flight

HMT-303 periodically deploys to Yuma, Arizona, where training efficiency is enhanced due to superb weather conditions and the proximity of ordnance delivery ranges. HMT-303 has trained Cobra and Huey pilots for the Marine Corps and Navy for more than 15 years. HMT-303 is the only Marine Corps squadron tasked with training Navy SAR pilots and newly designated Naval Aviators destined to become AH-1W and UH-IN/HH-1N replacement, refresher, and conversion pilots. Although the training mission assigned to HMT-303 requires sustained high tempo operations, the squadron has flown over 109,000 Class A and B mishap free flight hours.

In addition to flight training, HMT-303:

Manages the fleet-wide NATOPS standardization program for the H-1(HUEY)

Conducts Instrument Ground School for all of MAG-39 aircrew
Is responsible for the scheduling of both the AH-1W and the UH-1 Weapons System Trainer and Aircrew Procedures Trainer
