Helicopter Sea Combat Squadron Two Three [HSC-23]
HELSEACOMBATRON HSC-23
San Diego, CA
http://www.hsc23.navy.mil
Helicopter Sea Combat Squadron Twenty Three, known as the Wild Cards of HSC-23 will be stationed at Naval Air Station North Island after its establishment on October 1, 2006. Mission areas will include expeditionary strike group search and rescue support, combat search and rescue in support of strike warfare, naval special warfare, anti-surface ship warfare and helicopter logistical support for Western Pacific and Southern California units. To meet these commitments, the squadron will ultimately maintain 10 MH-60S helicopters. HSC-23 will employ over 50 officers and approximately 200 enlisted personnel to carry out these various missions. Unlike most squadrons, which deploy as a unit, HSC-23 will be made up of six expeditionary detachments. They will deploy aboard Fast Combat Support ships (T-AOEs) and Amphibious Assault Ships (LHAs and LHDs).
A Typical detachment will usually be comprised of two MH-60s helicopters, six pilots, one maintenance officer, six enlisted aircrew personnel, and 18 to 24 maintenance personnel. They form a team that will be able to meet every challenge in the rapidly changing, fast paced environment of logistics and Search and Rescue operations. VERTREP operations involve the replenishment of ships at sea, using helicopters. It calls for flexibility, skill, and a keen sense of situational awareness. Due to the demands of the fleet, missions must be carried out night and day, often in adverse weather conditions. These operations have become a critical link in sustaining strike group mission readiness. The incorporation of the helicopter for supply efforts has greatly reduced the alongside time required for conventional replenishment by highline, thereby increasing maneuverability of the fleet. HSC-23 will have the ability to provide fully qualified Naval Special Warfare crews for each detachment. This includes capabilities for night vision device cast and recoveries, soft duck insertions, aerial gunnery, and Helicopter Visit Board, Search and Seizure (HVBSS). In addition to these primary missions, HSC-23 will support a variety of other essential services to the fleet; medical evacuations, personnel transfers and special operations support, just to name a few. The parent command, or home guard, diligently supports Southern California fleet operations and training requirements ashore and in the waters off Southern California’s coast. The squadron’s first deployment will be in support of the Global War on Terror by performing the Army’s Air Ambulance mission in Kuwait. Future missions will include Organic Mine Counter Measures and Armed Helicopter as the systems complete development and are fielded to operational commands
