USS ARLEIGH BURKE is the lead ship of the ARLEIGH BURKE class of guided missile destroyers. These ships are the first destroyers in the world equipped with the AEGIS Weapons Systems.
USS ARLEIGH BURKE was the first U.S. Navy ship designed to incorporate shaping techniques to reduce radar cross-section to reduce their detectability and likelihood of being targeted by enemy weapons and sensors. Originally designed to defend against Soviet aircraft, cruise missiles, and nuclear attack submarines, this higher capability ship is to be used in high-threat areas to conduct antiair, antisubmarine, antisurface, and strike operations.

USS STOUT is the sixth ARLEIGH BURKE class guided missile destroyer and the first U.S. Navy ship named in honor of Rear Admiral Herald F. Stout, U.S. Navy (1903-1987), who was awarded two Navy Crosses for heroism while in command of the destroyer USS CLAXTON (DD 571) during World War Two.

USS GONZALEZ is the 16th ARLEIGH BURKE class guided missile destroyer. In 1999 she participated in Operation Allied Force where she has fired Tomahawk cruise missiles on Yugoslav ground targets. (Images at the end of this site.) One missile was damaged and splashed into the water, some meters next to the destroyer.

Strike Fighter Squadron (VFA) 82 received official word in November 2004 that its would disestablish at the end of Fiscal Year 2005. On Aug. 10, the Navy notified Congress of their plan to disestablish VFA-82. Following their expected return to MCAS Bearufort in early 2005, the Marauders of VFA-82 would begin the gradual process of reallocating their aircraft and personnel to other fleet commands.

USS Enterprise (CVN-65) with CVW-1 embarked arrived Norfolk, Virginia 19 December 2007; ending her tenth Mediterranean Sea deployment operating with the 6th Fleet and 17th voyage in the Mediterranean Sea; her 3rd Operation Enduring Freedom and 3rd Operation Iraqi Freedom and 1st Maritime Security Operations (MSO) on the US Navy’s 85th Arabian Sea and Persian Gulf deployment since September 1945 operating with the 5th Fleet and Central Command; her 15th Gulf of Aden & Red Sea voyage; her 15th Suez Canal transit and the US Navy’s 125th carrier Suez Canal transit and upon return will make her 16th Suez Canal transit and the US Navy’s 126th carrier Suez Canal. Her 28th deployment since her commission on November 25, 1961 ended (7 July 2007 to 19 December 2007) and approximately the US Navy’s 786th carrier FWFD.
Enterprise is the flagship for Carrier Strike Group 12, which include the guided-missile destroyers USS Forrest Sherman (DDG 98), USS James E. Williams (DDG 95), USS Arleigh Burke (DDG 51) and USS Stout (DDG 55); the guided-missile cruiser USS Gettysburg (CG 64); and the fast-attack submarine USS Philadelphia (SSN 690) all based in Norfolk, and also the fast combat support ship USNS Supply (T-AOE 6) based in Earle, N.J. There are nearly 7,500 Sailors and Marines in the strike group.
In addition to being the flagship of the strike group, Enterprise is also home to CVW 1. The air wing is comprised of the “Checkmates” of Strike Fighter Squadron (VFA) 211 flying the F/A-18 Super Hornet and the “Knighthawks” of VFA-136; the “Sidewinders” of VFA-86; the “Thunderbolts” of Marine Fighter Attack Squadron 251 all flying the F/A-18 Hornet. Also joining CVW 1 are the “Dragonslayers” of Helicopter Anti-Submarine Squadron (HS) 11 flying the SH-60 Seahawk; the “Rooks” of Electronic Attack Squadron (VAQ) 137 flying the EA-6B Prowler; the “Screwtops” of VAW-123 flying the E-2C Hawkeye; the “Maulers” of Sea Control Squadron (VS) 32 flying the S-3B Viking; and the “Rawhides” of Fleet Logistics Support Squadron (VRC) 40 flying the C-2A Greyhound.
