Commander Rear Adm. Philip H. Cullom, CCSG 8, and CVW-17 embarked USS George Washington (CVN 73) to participate in Partnership of the Americas in the U.S. Southern Command area of focus (AOF). Brazil, Argentina and the United States conducted UNITAS 49-08 in support of U.S. Southern Command's Partnership of the Americas 2008 (POA 08). After approximately two months, the ship continued on its transit while Carrier Strike Group 8 and CVW-17 returned to Norfolk. DESRON 40, Kauffman and Farragut remained in the SOUTHCOM AOF to continue their participation in Partnership of the Americas for a six-month deployment. Prior to entering the Pacific, CVW-17 (AA) and CCSG-8 returned to Oceana. VFA-143; VFA-103; VFA-83; VFA-131 and VAW-121 are assigned to CVW-7 (AG) stationed at ?Naval Air Station Jacksonville, FL and reported to be onboard in the Pacific, while CVW-17 squadrons were not reported publicly during the first two months of deployment. GW relieved Kitty Hawk of her forward deployed duties in San Diego rather then Hawaii between 7 to 27 August 2008, due to a fire that occurred onboard in the Pacific prior to reaching San Diego. Her 9th deployment since her commission on the East Coast on 4 July 1992 ended (April 7 to 27 May 2008) and approximately the US Navy's 790th carrier FWFD.

Commander, Strike Fighter Wing, U.S. Pacific Fleet http://www.csfwp.navy.mil

The mission of Commander, Strike Fighter Wing, U.S. Pacific Fleet is to provide combat ready strike fighter squadrons trained to conduct carrier-based, all weather, attack, fighter and support missions as required by the fleet tactical commander. Commander, Strike Fighter Wing maintains close liaison with Commander Naval Air Force, U.S. Pacific Fleet and embarked Air Wing commanders in the execution of this mission.

Initially under the control of Commander, Fleet Air Alameda, Naval Air Station, and its home ported units were placed under the command of Commander, Fleet Air Lemoore on August 25, 1969. On July 1, 1973 the name was changed to Commander, Light Attack Wing, U.S. Pacific Fleet and additional duties and responsibilities were assigned to the Command. Concurrent with the full fleet transition from the A-7 Corsair to the F/A-18 Hornet, the Wing was re-designated Commander, Strike Fighter Wing, U.S. Pacific Fleet (CSFWP) on April 15, 1991. Over its history the Wing has flown the A-1 Skyraiders (or SPAD), the venerable A-4 Skyhawk, the workhorse A-7 Corsair, and now, the multi-role F/A-18 Hornet.
CSFWP advises Commander Naval Air Force, U.S. Pacific Fleet in the area of strike fighter aviation and is responsible for the readiness training of the strike fighter squadrons deploying on our West Coast aircraft carriers. The Commander is responsible for all aspects of training, manning, maintenance, and logistics support for all units under his command.

The shore commands which comprise Strike Fighter Wing Pacific reporting to CSFWP are Aircraft Intermediate Maintenance Department (AIMD), Aviation Supply Department ( ASD), Strike Fighter Weapons School Pacific(SFWSP), Readiness Training Squadrons VFA-122 and VFA-125, along with CSFWP Detachments in Fallon, Nevada, and El Centro, California. There are currently ten F/A-18 fleet units home ported at Naval Air Station Lemoore, ?along with three permanently forward deployed and home ported in Japan, aboard carrier USS Kitty Hawk (CV 63).

The "Rough Raiders" of VFA-125, the Navy's first F/A-18 Hornet squadron, and the "Flying Eagles" of VFA-122, the Navy's first F/A-18 Super Hornet Squadron train Navy and Marine Corps Strike Fighter pilots to fly the Hornet and Super Hornet. ?These squadrons also provide the initial training for Navy and Marine Corps Maintenance personnel assigned to maintain these aircraft and their ?sophisticated systems.

The "Outlaws" of Strike Fighter Weapons School, Pacific provide tactics and ordnance training for the Strike Fighter community. The maintenance units at Fallon and El Centro provide support to squadrons deployed to these training locations.

Since flight operations commenced at Naval Air Station Lemoore, the Light Attack/Strike Fighter community has led the fleet. We demand nothing less from ourselves today and will ensure the continuation of that proud tradition.
