SUBRON 11 - CSS-11 San Diego, CA – Up dated 18 July 2008

SUBRON Submarine Squadron 11
Submarine Squadron 11
COMSUBRON ELEVEN
CSS-11
San Diego, CA
http://www.css11.navy.mil

Submarine Squadron 11 consists of four LOS ANGELES (SSN 688) class nuclear-powered attack submarines, one diesel research submarine, three Torpedo Retrievers, a floating dry-dock and the Submarine Maintenance Engineering Team. In addition to the operational ships, the squadron staff is responsible for providing training, material and personnel readiness support.

Submarine Squadron 11 was commissioned July 1, 1986, on board her flagship, USS MCKEE (AS 41), at Naval Submarine Base Point Loma, San Diego, as a result of a reorganization of Commander, Submarine Group 5. Captain W. L. Hicks was assigned as the first Squadron Commander.

Over the years, Squadron 11 has continued to evolve. As older submarines have been transferred, the squadron has received new construction submarines from the East Coast and ships completing the Depot Modernization Program with significantly upgraded sensors and weapons capability. Squadron 11 submarines represent the most advanced submarine technology in the United States, and are some of the most capable attack submarines in the world.

The Squadron’s submarines maintain a very aggressive operational schedule, including Carrier and Expeditionary Strike Group Deployments, type training and services to other ships in the Southern California Operating Areas, independent operations to enhance readiness, six-month deployments to the Western Pacific and demanding maintenance periods.

More than 74 officers and 644 enlisted personnel, overseen by the Squadron Staff of 25 officers and 62 enlisted personnel, man Squadron 11 assets. http://www.css11.navy.mil

Research Submarine USS Dolphin (AGSS 555)

Description: USS Dolphin (AGSS 555) is the Navy's only operational, diesel-electric, deep-diving, research and development submarine.

Background: Shortly after her commisioning in 1968, USS Dolphin established an unmatched world depth record for operational submarines. The submarine has since amassed an impressive record of scientific and military accomplishments, and now serves as a unit of the U.S. Naval Submarine Force, U.S. Pacific Fleet, under Commander, Submarine Development Squadron Five. Dolphin is home ported in San Diego and berthed at NCCOSC RDTE Division (NRaD) Pier 160.

Employed by both civilian and Navy activities, the research submarine is equipped with an extensive instrumentation suite that supports missions such as acoustic deep-water and littoral research, near-bottom and ocean surveys, weapons launches, sensor trials, and engineering evaluations.

Features: Because she was designed as a test platform, USS Dolphin can be modified both internally and externally to allow installation of up to 12 tons of special research and test equipment. The submarine has internal and external mounting points, multiple electronic hull connectors, and up to 10 equipment racks for project use.

Point of Contact: Formal requests for use of USS Dolphin should be submitted to the chairman of the USS Dolphin Advisory Group (DAG) at the following address:
