DESRON 26 Changes Command
Story Number: NNS080205-16
Release Date: 2/5/2008 3:46:00 PM
From USS Harry S. Truman Public Affairs
JEBEL ALI, United Arab Emirates (NNS) -- Commander, Destroyer Squadron (DESRON) 26 held a change of command ceremony while in port Jebel Ali, Jan. 29.
Capt. Michael A. Strano relieved Capt. Richard L. Williams as commander, DESRON 26 in a change of command ceremony.
During Williams' time as DESRON 26, he had success after success and a list of "firsts." As sea combat commander for the Harry S. Truman Carrier Strike Group, DESRON 26 planned, coordinated, and executed a major Sink-Exercise of the Ex-USS LaSalle, employing long-range tactics to counter emerging, fifth-generation threats in support of major combat operations.
As commander, Task Group 152.0, Williams breathed new life into Maritime Security Operations through innovative strategic development of a Coalition Task Force campaign, optimizing Expeditionary Strike Force capabilities and an afloat forward staging base with the addition of Central/South Arabian Gulf Navies.
In Norfolk, DESRON 26 earned its reputation as the "go-to" squadron for readiness in support of the Fleet Response Plan. In the course of one year, DESRON 26 ships completed five Board of Inspection and Survey Material Inspections, scoring well above the fleet average.
Williams will report in February to 5th Fleet Headquarters in Manama, Bahrain, as deputy commander for 5th Fleet.
Strano comes to the squadron from Washington, where he was the senior military assistant to the under secretary of defense (comptroller and chief financial officer). Prior to this, he was the executive assistant and naval aide to the assistant secretary of the navy (financial management and comptroller).
At sea, Strano has commanded USS Robert G. Bradley (FFG 49) and USS Oriole (MHC 55). He now assumes command of DESRON 26 and commander, Task Group 152.0 in charge of Maritime Security Operations in the Persian Gulf.
The Harry S. Truman Carrier Strike Group is on deployment in the 5th Fleet area of operations, which will include five months in the Persian Gulf supporting Operation Iraqi Freedom, Operation Enduring Freedom and Maritime Security Operations in support of the war on terrorism.

DESRON TWO SIX HISTORY
From Korea to Vietnam and the Caribbean to the Middle East, Destroyer Squadron TWO SIX has served the United States Navy for more than 50 years. In 1950, four general purpose destroyers established the squadron and saw action in Korea until 1952. Following the end of the Korean conflict, the squadron departed the Pacific for a new homeport in Norfolk, Virginia. In 1964, Destroyer Squadron TWO SIX became one of the Navy's three all guided missile squadrons consisting of six modern and versatile destroyers. The squadron saw combat action in Southeast Asia with the Pacific Fleet from 1964 to 1970. From 1971 to 1974, Destroyer Squadron TWO SIX was selected by the Chief of Naval Operations to evaluate a new manning concept in which ships would be manned and commanded by outstanding officers one rank junior to those normally assigned.
This "Mod Squad", as it was nicknamed, initiated the "Go Navy" cruise recruiting program with 626 prospective recruits embarked in Destroyer Squadron TWO SIX ships conducting operations off Newport, Rhode Island.
Since 1974, Destroyer Squadron TWO SIX has participated in several noteworthy events with the U.S. SECOND FLEET including the first Anti-Air Warfare Training Ship Program, the first Atlantic Fleet Open Ocean Mobile Sea Range Operation, Operation Said ("Review of the Tall Ships"), and the 1976 NATO firepower Demonstration.
In April 1978, Atlantic Fleet Destroyer Squadrons were reorganized and Destroyer Squadron TWO SIX was designated a tactical squadron, responsible for the at-sea training and operations of Atlantic Fleet destroyers and frigates during exercises and deployments, while administrative responsibilities were assigned to readiness squadrons who remained in homeport.
In September of 1995 as a result of the reorganization of the Surface Forces Atlantic, destroyer squadrons now became permanent Immediate Superior In Command (ISIC) to all destroyers and frigates. This reorganization replaced all tactical destroyer squadrons and readiness squadrons and combined the duties and responsibilities of the two into the new Destroyer Squadron.
Destroyer Squadron TWO SIX most recently deployed to the Arabian Gulf with the USS HARRY S. TRUMAN Strike Group from October 2004 to April 2005 in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom and Enduring Freedom.
Since that time, DESRON TWO SIX surged to provide crucial Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief Operations along the U.S. Gulf Coast following Hurricane Katrina, and participated in two highly successful multi-national naval exercises: Exercise PANAMAX 2005 in the Gulf of Mexico and Exercise BALTOPS 2006 in the Baltic Sea.
Today, Destroyer Squadron TWO SIX overseas the combat readiness of its six ships:
