COMDESRON TWO FOUR HISTORY
Destroyer Squadron TWO FOUR, formerly Escort Destroyer Squadron SIX was established 1 July 1956 and homeported in Newport, Rhode Island. The “KEYSTONE” squadron name carried over from the original formation of Escort Destroyer Squadron SIX when the Commodore and all Commanding Officers hailed from the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.
In 1978, DESRON 24 was designated a Tactical Destroyer Squadron. Through the decade of the eighties, Destroyer Squadron TWO FOUR conducted Battle Group operations in the North Atlantic Ocean and participated in naval contingency operations in Beirut, Lebanon; rescue operations in Grenada; anti-terrorist strikes into Libya and freedom of navigation operations in the Black Sea and Gulf of Sidra.
Commander Destroyer Squadron TWO FOUR embarked in USS SARATOGA in August 1990, conducting operations in support of Operation Desert Storm. After completing three additional deployments embarked in USS SARATOGA, COMDESRON TWO FOUR was re-designated from a Tactical Destroyer Squadron to a permanent Immediate Superior In Command (ISIC) Destroyer Squadron on 1 September 1995.
COMDESRON TWO FOUR was initially assigned permanent ISIC duties for USS SPRUANCE, USS JOHN HANCOCK, and USS TAYLOR. In 1997, COMDESRON TWO FOUR began a nearly ten year affiliation with the John F. Kennedy Battle Group. COMDESRON TWO FOUR deployed four times with the John F. Kennedy Battle Group, including the final deployment of the JFK in 2004.
Following the decommissioning of the USS JOHN F KENNEDY in 2007, COMDESRON TWO FOUR was selected to serve as the Command Element onboard the USNS COMFORT (T-AH 20) Humanitarian Assistance Deployment to Central and South America and the Caribbean in conjunction with United States Southern Command’s Partnership of the Americas 2007 and President Bush’s Americas Initiative. USNS COMFORT visited twelve countries before returning to Norfolk in October 2007. Planned and executed by COMDESRON TWO FOUR, USNS COMFORT performed over 380,000 procedures on over 98,000 patients of the western hemisphere’s poorest and most disadvantaged peoples.
Currently, COMDESRON TWO FOUR plans and executes training exercises such as the quarterly Southeast Anti-Submarine Warfare Integrated Training Initiative (SEASWITI), Joint Warrior exercises in the North Atlantic in partnership with the Royal Navy, and Submarine Commander’s Courses for operational training of prospective Commanding Officers of submarines.
The squadron is administratively and operationally assigned to COMMANDER, STRIKE FORCE TRAINING, ATLANTIC (CSFTL) and is the Immediate Superior in Command (ISIC) for USS CARNEY, USS FARRAGUT, USS ROOSEVELT, and USS THE SULLIVANS.
