DESRON SEVEN MISSION
The mission of Destroyer Squadron Seven (DESRON SEVEN) is to conduct prompt, sustained combat operations at sea in support of United State national policy. A DESRON SEVEN Commander serves as the administrative commander or Immediate Superior in Command (ISIC) of the ships assigned to the squadron. Each one of those ships is equipped to operate in a high-density, multi-threat environment either independently or as an integral member of a Carrier Strike Group or Expeditionary Strike Group.
In addition to duties as ISIC for the five ships currently assigned to the squadron, the staff has also been busy planning and training for our deployment as part of the USS RONALD REAGAN Carrier Strike Group (CSG). While currently on deployment, the Commodore serves as Sea Combat Commander (SCC). SCC duties encompass Surface Warfare Commander (SUWC), Under-Sea Warfare Commander (USWC), Maritime Inspection Commander (MIC) [U.N. Sanctions Enforcement], LAMPS Element Coordinator (LEC) ["LAMPS" are SH-60B Light Airborne Multi-Purpose System helicopters carried by the surface combatants], Defensive Mine Warfare (MIW-D), Force Protection Coordinator (FPC), Explosive Ordnance Disposal Coordinator (EODC) and Submarine Operational Controlling Authority (SOCA) [responsible for coordinating employment of attack submarines assigned to the Strike Group].

DESRON SEVEN HISTORY
Destroyer Squadron SEVEN was first established in September 1920 as a reserve squadron of 15 ships home-ported at Charleston, South Carolina. The squadron was deactivated from July 1922 until April 1939 when it was reorganized in San Diego, California.
In December 1940, the squadron was reformed at Newport, Rhode Island and, until the end of the European War, was actively engaged in escort duties throughout the Atlantic and Mediterranean Theaters. In May 1945, the squadron was reformed at San Diego, California and operated with Pacific Fleet for the remainder of World War II.
In November 1945, the squadron was deactivated and in January 1946, DESRON SIXTY was re-designated DESRON SEVEN. Ships of the squadron participated in the atomic bomb tests at Bikini Atoll and saw extended action during the Korean War, including the invasion of Inchon. During the Vietnam conflict, the squadron again saw action on the Market Time patrol and engaged in the bombardment of North Vietnam.
In January and February 1979, the squadron participated in the evacuation of Americans from Iran. During Operation Desert Storm, COMDESRON SEVEN saw extensive combat action. As the North Arabian Gulf Local Anti-Surface Warfare Commander, COMDESRON SEVEN directed multi-national forces in offensive operations which eliminated the Iraqi Navy.
COMDESRON SEVEN’s most recent deployment (Nov. 2002 to June 2003) marked the sixth time that COMDESRON SEVEN deployed to the Arabian Gulf in support of such actions as OPERATION SOUTHERN WATCH, OPERATION ENDURING FREEDOM, and OPERATION IRAQI FREEDOM as part of the Constellation Strike Group.
In May 2004 COMDESRON SEVEN embarked USS RONALD REAGAN, the Navy’s newest aircraft carrier, to serve as the Sea Combat Commander for the RONALD REAGAN STRIKE GROUP. As Sea Combat Commander the DESRON is responsible to the Strike Group Commander for the overall planning and execution of maritime operations including Surface and Subsurface Warfare, Maritime Interdiction Operations, Mine Warfare, and Force Protection.

USS HALSEY was the eighth ship in the LEAHY-class of guided missile cruisers and the first ship in the Navy named after Fleet Admiral Halsey. The commissioning ceremony of USS HALSEY even included a eulogy by Fleet Admiral Chester W. Nimitz, USN, on Fleet Admiral Halsey's illustrious career.
Commissioned as a guided missile frigate and later reclassified a guided missile cruiser on June 30, 1975, HALSEY was decommissioned and stricken from the Navy Register on January 28, 1994 at San Diego. Transferred March 7 the same year to the Maritime Administration, she was laid up at the Suisun Bay, CA. reserve to await final disposal. USS MILIUS is the 19th ship in the ARLEIGH BURKE - class of Guided Missile Destroyers. The ship is named for the late Captain Paul Milius, an OP-2E reconnaissance pilot who was shot down during the Vietnam War.
USS MILIUS is taking part in an Optimal Manning Project that reduces the numer of billets authorized from 289 to 231. Aboard MILIUS, the installation of a new self-service mess line has allowed the ship to reduce the number of food service attendants (FSA) on the ship. Greater use of video cameras for remote monitoring will reduce the need aboard MILIUS for 24-hour manning of certain watches and distance support software will give Sailors an increased capability to access technicians ashore.
Aboard MILIUS, some procedural changes have also helped the ship to reduce billets. The boatswain's mate of the watch, quartermaster of the watch and signalman of the watch have been consolidated into a new position called the bridge specialist. Electronics technicians and information systems technicians are learning each other's jobs and the ship is adopting a more flexible, rapid-response approach to damage control, using one robust repair locker instead of three to fight a main-space fire.
