Sheik' offends grieving family

Richard Kerbaj | December 06, 2007

A MYSTERIOUS Muslim cleric has written to the grieving family of slain Australian soldier Luke Worsley saying their son "died for nothing" while carrying out an "evil" act.

John Worsley, the father of the 26-year-old commando, received the letter from "Sheik Haron" days after his son was killed by the Taliban in Afghanistan.

The letter, also posted on Sheik Haron's website, urges Mr Worsley not to "be proud" of his son.

"We can't be proud when we lose our dear kids for nothing," says the letter, dated November 25, two days after Worsley was killed. "We lose our dear kids for nothing if we unjustly attack ... another country and our kids are killed while the other country is defending itself."

Mr Worsley, of Sydney, last night told The Australian through a relative that he was deeply upset by the letter.

"But at the end of the day, we are very proud of Luke," he said.

Muslim leaders last night condemned the letter as "distasteful", saying it threatened to bring Islam into disrepute. The leaders said they had never heard of Sheik Haron and questioned his motives in writing the letter.

Sydney-based spiritual leader Khalil Shami questioned the identity of Sheik Haron and condemned him for spreading hate.

"This is bad for the Muslim community because it further ruins our reputation," he said. "Anyone can say they're a sheik, but you have to live up to the title.

"I feel for the family of the young soldier killed. That soldier could have been my son or your son in the army. This young man went to protect and build Afghanistan and he has paid with his life. We should be proud of him."

The letter says "it would be nice" if Mr Worsley asked the Department of Defence to organise a ceremony "for the respect of innocent civilians, whether they have been killed by Australians or not".

"It was nice of Chief of (the) Defence Force Air Chief Angus Houston ... (to) extend his sympathies to your family but I don't know why he has not had any comment for the family of three innocents who were killed in that operation," it says.

The Australian contacted Sheik Haron through his website last night, but received only an auto-reply email saying: "We regret to say it is not possible to reply to all comments."

Deport this sick perverted individual and all his cohorts immediately. How dare he speak like that in our country. He needs to pack his bags and return to that desiesed infected hole he crawled out of!  Question
