JR,
Hey, I need some help. A number of years ago I purchased a bag of WW2 medals. I bought all this stuff at a flea market in a box..
I have already found `homes' for all of the items .. well, for all but one...
I need you to look at this badge and tell me if you can if it is an `up to date' (as in used today) badge. I thought I was buying an old one but a fella told me this was the real deal and I couldn't sell it on ebay..
Being an old Air Force Cop, I figured you would be the best to know...
so look this over and tell me what you think or who I should talk to...

:)
Hi Indian,
I did a little looking myself and came up with the following:
This is what the current Air Force Security Police (Security Froces) badge looks like:
http://usmilitary.about.com/library/milinfo/afbadges/security.jpg . I couldn't find online, anyway, the medal you show in your post. But judging from what is written on the badge, I have to conclude that the medal/badge has to be post-WWII, as the Department of the Air Force wasn't officially commissioned until 1947. Hope that is of help to you.
Doc

I know this type of badge was worn 7 or 8 years ago when I was doing some training for the Air Force.. I had one class of nothing but Air Cops... I sure believe this was the same badge they were wearing (like the one I have)... They phase these out every so often for new designs and I am hoping this one is phased out too... or I'm not supposed to have it
again thanks for the information

You're welcome my friend. I'm just sorry I couldn't be of more help. Barbara was at a loss as well and she's ex-Air Force.

Hey "Indian", yes Sir they are both genuine, the one on the left is the "function badge" master Air Base Ground Defence skill level badge, usually worn by senior NCOs. It is however the "old" version used prior to 1996. The new ones are slightly different and of polished metal. The Police Shield is also of the "old" variety pre 1996, the current ones are identical save for the fact that they too are of "polished" metal. Hope this helps Buddy... _________________

Okay... more questions:
1) mine is made with a material like silver .. it is tarnished but with a small amount of rubbing, it becomes shiny again.. Are you saying the new ones (used today) are always shiny and requires no polishing..
2) Were these two `badges' worn at the same time?? If yes, I know where the bigger of the two was worn (chest) but where would the other be worn?? above the bigger one?? on hat?? Jackett??
3) Are these illegle to own??
4) who would I contact at the local AF base to ask.. if you or friends don't know.. _________________

1) It depends on its age if it is from the early 60s of before it could be solid"sterling", in which case it should have a silver content mark on the reverse side. And also it may say "Air Police" instead of "Security Police". It also may have "US GOVERNMENT PROPERTY" stamped on the pin on the back as well.
2) The large Police Shield is worn on the top pocket it's self on the left breast below the ribbons, of the shirt or class A jacket, and in past years on the issued wind breaker. The function badge is worn in the fashion of Jump wings abnove the ribbons on the left breast.
(see my picture on the picture pages. that is the proper wear).
3) Yes and no, they are & were a "controlled item", just like a weapon. However the fact you have one does not mean that you are in serious violation of the law. If it stays in your collection, i.e. a shadow box etc., it is fine.
4) If you feel that you need to contact the Base ask for the Law Enforcement Desk and explain the situation. They may or may not ask you to turn it in. If you turn it in they will not re-emberse you the cost you paid for it. I'd keep it if I were you, just secure it as I mentioned above.
Note: Some folks worry that a less than honorable person could use the shield to access the base or the flight line or even classified documents, etc., this can not happen. You also need a valid Military ID and a restricted area / line badge and in some cases more than that. So if some unauthorized person were to try to use the shield for these purposes they would wind up shot or in jail for a very long time.
I hope this helps you Bud... _________________

I have collected `old badges' for years but could never really figure out if this was a `okay' item or not. I did not plan on keeping this one though... I was going to put it on ebay .. guess it'll stay with it's brothers now.. :) _________________

Just a little extra current information about our shields. About 3 years ago, Air Force Security Forces Center went back to a dedicated system of control for the SF shields. All SF shields are now numbered again, including those personnel that may have graduated and been issued badges without numbers originally. When this went into effect, all of the SF supply sections had to take inventory of all shields, record shield numbers and send them to AFSFC to be placed in the database, and request numbered shields for those that didn't have them. As of current, all SF shields are accounted for and are required to be turned in upon separation. When an SF retires, AFSFC retires that number, and the retired member may keep their shield. As I have seen it, the SF supply sections maintain some non-numbered shields that are given to those separating who may want one for a shadow box. Based on the current system, you being in posession one of the old style badges would most likely be considered an obsolete historical piece, and shouldn't be cause for any problems. _________________

BTW; I got to keep mine when I retired, it's one of my favorite posessions. _________________

As you know, I crosstrained into Security Forces, and I love it. The point is that it was my choice so if I didn't like it, it was my own fault, I have nothing to complain about. Now granted, we do have a lot of those that washed in to SF, but you just have to make the best of every situation. _________________
