|
|
Dear Mr. Rieckhoff (founder of IAVA),
I discovered your website, " IAVA.org " the other day, by accident, while looking for another website. I immediately was interested and impressed with IAVA.
Being deeply involved with the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Ladies Auxiliary and very supportive of all our Veterans, I had several questions come to mind, as I learned more about your organization.
1. What is the difference between the Mission of the VFW and the IAVA?
2. Before the concept of the IAVA, were you, or are you an active member, of a VFW Post somewhere?
3. IAVA say they are the "nation's first and largest group dedicated to the Troops and Veterans of the wars of Irag and Afghanistan".
Does the IAVA think that the VFW and the Ladies Auxiliary to the VFW, doesn't have the best interest and welfare of our Veterans, including our Irag and Afghanistan Veterans, as their top priority?
The VFW launched Operation Uplink in 1996 to connect active-duty troops and hospitalized veterans with their loved ones. Contributions from supporters purchase phone cards that are sent to those serving this great nation. In total, VFW Operation Uplink has distributed more than 8.5 million phone cards. In 2006, the VFW also began hosting “Free Call Days.” On holidays throughout the year, troops can call home—at no charge—from Internet cafes throughout Iraq and Afghanistan. Free talk time has already totaled more than 5 million minutes!
VFW Unmet Needs helps service members and their families who face unexpected financial difficulties, often as a result of unexpected or extended deployments. Military families can apply for grants of up to $2,500 to cope with emergencies and get through tough times.
VFW Military Assistance Program works to give troops and military families the help they need during long deployments and when they return. The program sponsors numerous morale-boosting sendoffs and homecomings for troops and their families. The events—which often include free entertainment, food and other festivities—are held at military bases across the nation, as well as at local VFW Posts.
The VFW promotes programs that help build our communities. Our programs are geared toward developing tomorrow’s leaders and recognizing those who are building that future today.
VFW gives out over $3.6 million annually through our Voice of Democracy scholarships to high-school students and Patriots Pen savings bonds to junior high and middle-school students. Candidates for these awards are nominated at the Post level and compete at the state and national levels. Finalists are invited to VFW ceremonies in Washington, D.C. The VFW recently added the VFW Military Family Scholarship for veterans and their families. Applicants apply to VFW National Headquarters for this award.
Community service takes many forms, from volunteering at local VA hospitals to volunteering in community clean-ups. VFW members volunteer over 13 million hours annually in their communities.
The VFW also offers recognition to leaders in our community. These awards go to teachers, police officers, firefighters, and emergency response personnel who have distinguished themselves through their dedication and service.
Mr. Rieckhoff, you and all our Veterans, have my highest respect and I thank each and every one of you, for the freedoms that we enjoy today.
As a dear friend of mine, who is the Arkansas State VFW Commander says: "our Legislative Conference coincides with our National Voice Of Democracy and Patriots Pen awards Banquet in Washington DC where our National Commander, with the support of hundreds of gathered delegates from all 50 states and our four overseas departments, testifies as to the needs of our current military and the veterans of our military past and future to the Senate and House of Representatives Veterans Committees telling our politicians this message amongst many others: that money is not the question when it comes to our veterans, there isn't a choice; if we can afford to send our military over to fight for our country we can afford to take care of them when they come home! We tell our countries leaders that we are near two million strong, we are watching and that we vote! Make sure that IAVA members know that we in the VFW and VFWA appreciate their service to our country, support their efforts to help their comrades and invite them to join our organization and thereby with the added strength given us by their numbers we will be better equipped to help them, active military and all veterans."
Loyally,
Theresa S. Harrell

Hmm,
Maybe the 2 organizations should merge?
Together the 2 would be a powerful force.
Seperate, not so much.
From what I know of the VFW they do alot for our vets.
This is the 1st I've heard of the IAVA.
I'll be reading up on them as time allows for me to.
Thanks Roadie for the post _________________ <table border="0" bordercolor="#F6FCFD" width="1" bgcolor="#F6FCFD">
