Here another problem that really set me on fire. There is no excuse for this either.

N.C. barracks video draws attention to conditions

RALEIGH (AP) - A video shot by the father of an 82nd Airborne Division soldier that shows poor conditions such as mold in a barracks at Fort Bragg caught the attention Friday of a U.S. senator and high-ranking Army officials.
Ed Frawley, a dog breeder from Menomonie, Wis., posted the narrated video on You-Tube.com on Tuesday after traveling to North Carolina to welcome his son, Sgt. Jeff Frawley, home from a 15-month tour in Afghanistan.
The video shows peeling paint, mold, a bathroom drain plugged with what appears to be sewage and a broken room door lock, conditions that Frawley described as disgusting and embarrasing.
"The instant you walk through the front door, you know you are in a building that should be condemned," he said.
Sen. Elizabeth Dole, R-N.C., said she contacted the Army secretary after learning of the barracks' condition. "Our service members deserve safe, clean housing," she said. "If this video posting accurately portrays living conditions for our soldiers, this is wholly unacceptable and it must be immediately corrected."
Rep. Bob Etheridge, D-N.C., whose district includes Fort Bragg, agreed.
"Although the military continues to be stretched thin during the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, there is no excuse for substandard housing for our soldiers," Etheridge said.
Maj. Tom Earnhardt, spokesman for the 82nd Airborne, said the conditions are "appalling and unacceptable," but said the post must use the buildings that the Army provides.
One problem was that maintenance and repairs weren't complete because the soldiers in C Company, 2nd Battalion, 508th Parachute Infantry Regiment, came home three weeks ahead of schedule, he said. The barracks had been empty, except for brief periods, since the company left Fort Bragg.
The Army hosted a tour of the barracks for the news media. Many of the buildings used by the division were built in the 1950s, but are being replaced. About 40 of the old buildings remain, and all single paratroopers are scheduled to be in new buildings by 2012.

How embarrasing for our state to be shown in such a manner, how embarrasing for Fort Bragg to know the conditions of these barracks and not making some other arrangments for the troops coming home. Even if they were three weeks early they should never have been put in these barracks. They should not have been allowed to get into these conditions in the first place, sounds to me like it has been going on for a long time. Much longer than 15 months. Why didn't they start repairs as soon as the troops pulled out so that they would be ready when they returned. If they do not have enough help on base there is always the reserves that they could call in to help with the repairs for these guys and gals that are out there putting their lives on the line for us here at home. Okay, I'm finished now, no more ranting.

Sorry Robbin I don't. All I know is what it said in the paper that it was shown on YouTube. I could not find it. Maybe Outsider will and will post the link. I wanted to see it for myself, but no luck. I just don't know how to find things on YouTube.
Maybe we will find it soon.

I found the video under Barracks for Charlie Co
2/508 82n Airborne, but could not figure out how to post it here. Sorry. It really is awful conditions and you can tell by the pictures that this has been going on for years and years. Nothing has been done to maintain these barracks. I read one blog from a soldier in another state that said the barracks at fort bragg looked like the hilton compared to the ones they had to stay in. This is really unacceptable conditions for men and women serving our country.

This is plain and simple BS and it makes me sick to know this is how we allow our soldiers to be treated. My heart hurts, my eyes are full of tears, and my mouth wants to scream words I should not say. I am not sure what we can all do but to do the same we have done already. I think now instead of emails I am going to do phone calls. If we can't take care of these men and woman, then bring them all home and be done with both wars. I can't sleep tonight do to my neck and back hurting so I am going to find links to all of Rep in each state and post here. I will find the links to every damn main news media I can. All I can say is God bless them the fight for them has just begun I ask everyone on this board to do something. As for as the food problem if for some damn reason they have to go 9-12 hrs without food they better damn well be able to eat whatever or as much as they want when they get back!!! Enough my dear friends is plain and simple ENOUGH... Evil or Very Mad Evil or Very Mad Evil or Very Mad

I just got this a couple minutes ago y'all;

By ROBERT BURNS, AP Military Writer

WASHINGTON - Army officials said Tuesday they are inspecting every barracks building worldwide to see whether plumbing and other problems revealed at Fort Bragg, N.C., last week are widespread.

Brig. Gen. Dennis Rogers, who is responsible for maintaining barracks throughout the Army, told reporters at the Pentagon that most inspections were done last weekend but he had not seen final results.

While not providing specifics about problems discovered during the weekend inspections, Rogers indicated some deficiencies were corrected. In cases where extensive repairs are deemed necessary, the soldiers in that housing would be moved elsewhere until the fixes are completed, he added.

Rogers said it was too soon to know whether the Fort Bragg problem was an isolated incident. He acknowledged the revelations from a video shot by the father of an 82nd Airborne Division soldier showing poor conditions such as mold inside the barracks, peeling interior paint and a bathroom drain plugged with sewage.

The soldier's father, Ed Frawley, said he was disgusted by the conditions that greeted his son and the rest of his 82nd Airborne unit that returned on April 7-8 after a 15-month tour of duty in Afghanistan.

"We let our soldiers down, and that's not like us," Rogers told reporters. "We let our soldiers down. That's not how we want America's sons and daughters to live. There's no good excuse for what happened."

He said the problems in that building have been fixed and that a final paint job is in the works. It is one of 24 barracks at Fort Bragg that were built in the 1950s and are scheduled for demolition by 2013. The barracks singled out by Frawley had been remodeled in April 2006, Rogers said.

Rogers said the Army's standard procedure is to inspect a barracks building to verify that it meets Army standards before it is occupied by soldiers returning from an overseas deployment. For reasons he was unable to explain, that apparently did not happen in the Fort Bragg incident.

A spokesman for Fort Bragg, Tom McCollum, told the same group of reporters that the post, which is one of the Army's largest with a population of 51,000 soldiers — including more than 12,000 who live on the post — is saddled with 1950s-vintage housing that is not popular with soldiers.

Of the more than 12,000 in barracks at Fort Bragg, about 2,500 are in those built in the 1950s, Army spokesman Paul Boyce said.

"Are soldiers happy with living in the Korean War-era barracks? No," McCollum said. They do not meet the expectations of today's troops, although the Army has done what it can to improve living conditions, McCollum said, speaking by telephone from Fort Bragg.

"Today, no matter how hard we try, we can't put enough lipstick on this pig to make it more pretty," the spokesman said. "So are there soldiers complaining? Yeah." He said they've been complaining for decades.

Yes it is, but the sad part is that it took a bunch of pissed off Americans and a leak to the press to get the Army off their collective a**es and make an effort to fix this horrible problem. But at least it LOOKs like they may be getting a start.

It is a start and I am very glad for that. VERY sad it got to this and it took a dad to bring light to it. But very glad that they will look into it and start to repair.
