Police ter pregnant soldier's death as 'suspicious'
FAYETTEVILLE, (AP) - Authorities are investigating the "suspicious" death of a pregnant soldier after her body was found at a Fayetteville motel just days after she arrived at Fort Bragg from Germany, officials said.
Spc. Megan Lynn Touma was identified Tuesday, two days after her body was found in a motel room identified by an odor.
The 23-year-old dental specialist with the 19th Replacement Company was from Cold Spring, Ky., and was born in Seoul, South Korea.
The Fayetteville Police Department called the death suspicious. Authorities said in a statement that they do not know the cause of death but said that Touma was seven months' pregnant at the time.
Touma had just arrived at Fort Bragg less than two weeks ago after spending three years assigned to the United States Army Dental Activity Clinic Bavaria in Bamber, Germany.
Touma is the second pregnant service member to die in North Carolina this year. Lance Cpl. Maria Lauterbach was found dead near Camp Lejeune in January. A fellow Marine, Cpl. Cesar Laurean, has been charged in her death and is awaiting extradition from Mexico.
A private memorial service for Touma will be held Friday at Hope Chapel. _________________

Official focus on soldier's absence
WILMINGTON N.C. (AP) - Fort Bragg officials said Wednesday they were investigating why a pregnant soldier who was found dead this week at a Fayetteville motel wasn't reported missing after she was absent from a formation.
The body of Spc. Megan Lynn Touma, 23, was identified Tuesday, two days after she was found dead. Fayetteville police have called the death suspicious, but few details have been released.
"We're shocked, first and foremost. It's always sad when you lose a soldier. And on top of that, here's a beautiful young woman who is seven months pregnant. It's sad, and deeply troubling," said Maj. Angela Funaro, a Fort Bragg spokeswoman.
Authorities said in a statement that they do not know the cause of death. Funaro said Touma, who was from Cold Springs, Ky., was divorced in 2007 but that she didn't have further information about the father of Touma's unborn baby or her ex-husband.
The State Medical Examiner's Office in Chapel Hill said it has received Touma's body, but it was unclear when an autopsy report would be released.
She signed into Fort Bragg's 19th Replacement Company on Thursday, June 12, at 2 a.m. and attended two required formations at 6:15 a.m. and 3 p.m. Touma was off the next day.
When she missed a formation Monday, June 16, she wasn't reported absent without leave after 24 hours, in accordance with Army regulations.
Funaro said the Army was investigating why the procedures weren't followed. _________________

A soldier has been named a person of interest in the death of pregnant soldier Spc. Megan Touma, a military spokesman said Saturday, the same day a newpaper released an anonymous letter in which the writer claimed responsibility for the young woman's killing.
Letter surfaces claiming murder may be the work of a serial killer.
Lt. Col. John Clearwater told The Associated Press the Ft. Bragg soldier is training at a special operations school, and he has not been charged with any crime.
The Fayetteville, N.C., Observer newspaper released an anonymous letter Saturday in which the writer claims to have murdered Touma, whose body was found in a Fayetteville hotel room bathtub on Saturday, June 21. _________________
