The Medal of Honor is the highest award for valor in action against an enemy force which can be bestowed upon an individual serving in the Armed Services of the United States. Generally presented to its recipient by the President of the United States of America in the name of Congress, it is often called the Congressional Medal of Honor.

Update 27 October 2007:
Though I made the first post in this thread when it was started I must give credit to Doc McKelvie for contributing the biggest portion of posts made here. Most of the posts that were in this thread until this morning were reposted by me from the original posts made on other past versions of this forum.
I've decided to "refresh" the topic a bit in order to give it "new life"
ALL previous posts have NOT been deleted they have been moved to the archives to preserve earned post counts.

Added by Outsider 5 November 2007
The Medal of Honor, established by joint resolution of Congress, 12 July 1862 (amended by Act of 9 July 1918 and Act of 25 July 1963) is awarded in the name of Congress to a person who, while a member of the Armed Services, distinguishes himself conspicuously by gallantry and intrepidity at the risk of his life above and beyond the call of duty while engaged in an action against any enemy of The United States; while engaged in military operations involving conflict with an opposing foreign force; or while serving with friendly foreign forces engaged in an armed conflict against an opposing armed force in which The United States is not a belligerent party. The deed performed must have been one of personal bravery or self-sacrifice so conspicuous as to clearly distinguish the individual above his comrades and must have involved risk of life. Incontestable proof of the performance of service is exacted and each recommendation for award of this decoration is considered on the standard of extraordinary merit.  Full-text Listings of Medal of Honor Citations The President, in the name of Congress, has awarded more than 3,400 Medals of Honor to our nation's bravest Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen, Marines, and Coast Guardsmen since the decoration's creation in 1861.

Ok since this thread has got so much dust on it I think I'll blow off a few layers and pick it up unless I'm ordered to cease and desist Question

Much appreciated Sir
Lets get to it then:
Let me first say the first of these submitions are Civil War era recipients and since that war was won by The Union Armies you can bet that no southern heroes are going to be honored on a site that is Government sponsored such as my source for these names.
I'm sure there were no Rebel soldiers awarded the MOH for actions during the Un civil war anyway.
I reserve the right to be wrong in that belief..

I was going to put this in the thread about this Navy seal who was awarded the MOH but then I thought why not put it in the official thread so that you all can witness an actual MOH presentation via video.

Lets pick it back up been tied up lately Rolling Eyes
Lets get three more out of the way we're still covering the civil war era and there doesn't seem to be too much in the way of information until we hit later wars then the citations are much more detailed.
My goal here is to cover ALL known recipients of this award when we get to the point where the recipient might still be living I will do something special to denote that it is a living recipient because most of the MOH recipients are awarded "Post humanuosly" meaning whatever they did to merit the award got them killed in action KIA*
