My fellow OW~CommandPost members
This is something I will try to do at least once a month to keep you updated on the progress of our little community here.
For this Months submition I will tell you that we as a growing community of friends and fellow supporters of our troops and civil servants we have since June 20 2006 grown at a slow pace[but we have grown] and we have endured drastic changes and
yet still we move forward in our humble but much needed mission here.

I never realised the responsability I was taking on when I started the first forum back in May of this year. I must say that eventhough I started this forum with a little knowlage of what to do, I learn more and more each day I'm still not convinced that I am the best person to be in the position that I am in as your leader here but the feedback I've gotten from each of you has been posative in nature and always supportive of me and my vision for the forum.

I promise you all this as we grow I'm sure that I will make mistakes but it is my hope that we will all learn and commit to grow from those mistakes
I have commited to treating each member that comes here as an equal and with the greatest respect possible.

Today I've had to demote my SR. Advisor at his request not because he messed up he just feels more comfortable as a general member and I can appreciate that. I would rather have a member that is open an honest with their desires as opposed to a staff member that is disscontent with their role therfore is not going to do their best because of that disscontent.
I will miss him as a fellow staff member but I'm confident that he will be just as awsome as a general member as he was while on staff

So as we grow and move forward  with our mission here I hope that you all will continue to remember that we are here for a purpose higher than ourselves. It is not about rank or tooting our own horns so as to appear more important than another.

Thank you all for your continued support
We will NOT fail here and we will grow over time so be patient and do your part to help us grow.

Hi OUTSIDER,

You and I go back to the Gunny's Sound Off Forum and we both either left of our own accord or were booted out because we didn't "fit in" in the long run.  Like you I too decided to created a forum dedicated to our veterans who have served in harm's way, whether wihtin the military or in civilian emergency services, e.g. - police, fire, rescue, ambulance, EMT, paramedic , doctor or  nurse.  The ONLY difference, as you already know, is that the site I created with the help of you and others also from this forum;  is that mine is strictly intended to help  current and future members who are either on active duty or are veterans themselves become aware of each other and what they as individuals can expect from their respective military services and the countries they serve the treatment they so richly deserve for serving their country's or community's by being prepared to go into harm's way.

It is an honour to also serve in this forum and to receive the honour and respect that has been given to me by the members of this forum.  As I have already said in other postings, I was saddened to hear that Indian had resigned as a staff member; but equally heartened to know that he intends to stay on as an active 'regular' member of this forum.  What he has to offer and the opinions he has about how the forum and its staff  is coming along is highly valued.  I only hope that in the long run I can live up to the level of commitment and standards that he showed as a staff member.  I salute you Indian and wish you all the best in your current and future endeavors.

I will continue to serve in this forum for as long as I am of use and needed; while at the same time trying to make "Doc McKelvie's World" a success in its own right.  Therefore, you can count on my unflinching support of you and the forum with no other desire than to be of continued value to the forum.  As to the future of this forum, you need only read the question I asked to know that I want this forum to go forward and be the best that we can make it.

Take care my friend and also Indian. All my best you and yours.

Doc

:)

Thanks Doc, You and I both know that this forum is going to take more than just one or two, It will depend on the whole team as oporating as one in order for this to be a compleate sucess. I was saddened deeply by Indians choice to step down but I also understood his need to do so. I wish him the best in whatever he decides to do in the future and I am sure that he will be just as important of an asset to the forum in his new capacity as he was while serving on staff.

October2006 Edition,
Well another month has passed us by and a few changes have come.
As with last months report I've recently retired another SR. command advisor at their request.

The member that is the logical replacement was unable to commit to the responsabilities of SR. command Advisor and has respectfuly declined the promotion.

So, for the time being the position of SR. Command Advisor is "decommissioned" until further notice.
Does that mean we are in trouble stability wise?

Oh no, we will be fine in that respect there is just no sense having the position with no one willing or able to fill it.
The position is NOT retired just mothballed until needed again.
Both The Indian and JohnnyReb served in that capacity with honor and have continued to be valuable assets to this forum in other respects.
I have recently "recommissioned the Forum Commandant an LT. Commandant rankings for the board.

Those went away a couple of months ago along with the many other changes that had to be made at that time.
The new rank images for those ranks were hand created by yours truely and cannot be claimed by any other forum on the net.
We have grown to a membership base of 26 registered users. We were at 27 but I was forced to delete the account of one member for inactivity and for an invalid Email address. As a result of that incedent New members have to be validated by me before they will be allowed to post.
I did not want to go that route but unfortunatly one can ruin the party for many that is just a fact of life that has to be lived with.

It is not our fault if someone does not take the time to read and understand  the rules when joining this site.

We will carry on though with or without their help.
Things are going fairly smoothly at this time most of you are pulling your fair share of the weight and I'm  proud of those that are.

You each have shown me that this idea was not a total waste of my time or yours.
For that I wish to thank you.
If you have not already please visit the opinions area.

The Indian has worked hard posting some thought prevoking threads and would love to hear your opinions on those subjects.

Also if you have any favorite recipies you'd like to share with others visit the cooking with style area and share yours and pick up others.
Until next month enjoy your time on the forum.

I'll see you all there.
Sincerely,
Outsider

Noveber 2006 edition
WOW! What a month it has been since my last post.
The Indian has left us of his own decision he was not banned
He just decided that he did not wish to support my efforts here anylonger.
He will be missed.
Also we have undergone a major change with moving from one host to this new one. At the begining of the move we had 29 registered members but to date only a few have made the jump.
I did go on the old board today and there were two new members that have registered since our move here.
I don't know who they are or if they are seriously wanting to be a part of our forum.
I have emailed both of them inviting them here and explaining the situation as best I could.
I will be posting some further changes later today concerning the new direction that we are taking.
I think that there is a need to move away from some of the previous
regulations and relax the rules a touch more so be watching for those announcements to be made.
I do hope you all will start getting more involved on the board soon.
I know this new forum may have some of you shaken up a bit but I can assure you it is not all that different from the last board.
No matter what happens I know that we are going to suceed as a community of patriots but it is not going to happen over night.
Time is going to be a necessity and as will patience be.
I'm working very hard to maintain contacts already made and trying to make new contacts all across the web.
So I know that we are going to make it.
Those of you that have been here from the begining know that I'm in this for the long haul and will not quit just because things are not moving fast enough for my taste.
Until next month carry on and keep moving forward with our mission to support our troops
Best wishes,
Outsider

January 2007 edition!!
Well we lost the December post for this thread so lets recap, shall we?
2006 was a roller coaster ride from hell. The first forum was started in May of 06' but the host was non condusive and insensative to our vision as a forum.
So we moved to our second host in June of 06' They were better suited for our needs but they still lacked sorely in the understanding department, also we faced a near shut down over some borrowed images that we used without proper permission while on that host and I think that a valuable lesson was learned in the process.
We recovered nicely from that challenge and we pressed forward with our mission.
We then moved to this third host which we were first slated to move to this month[Jan 07] but the move was bumped up to November to take advantage of the features this host offers. The Staff and I used this as a staff only forum for about 3 weeks getting the feel for this host and this board.
Then came the daunting task of moving as many of the posts from the old forum to this new one in order to preserv as much of our history as we could. Though we lost several members during the move we managed to surpass our highest membership totals ever by the end ov November we had 50 members registered though many of them were not active participants I've quit worrying about that so much.
And have started concentrating more on our mission here.
Then in Mid December we had front row seats to the crash heard around the World Shocked
We were very lucky here. We only lost about a months worth of posts and some rank and award images had to be reset there is still some of the index images that have to be replaced but all in good time.
Our troubles here are minor in comparison to others.
My good friends Clayton[afsp 90 02] and Trevor[Smitty] lost their entire forum which they may or may not recover.
I must say though the host has worked very close with me and other forum owners they host for to get our forums back running like they should be and I think that they have done a great job all while keeping up with the creation of new features that are soon to be released and promise to make the forum even better suited for our needs.
We have went from 6 members to just over 50 then back down to 18 and we are now back up to 57 registered members as of today 1 January 07.
Our Marching orders are in for 2007 and those orders are
FORWARD MARCH!!
Forward march

WOW!! February already?
Over the lat 30 days or so nothing too overly exiting has happened but the first presentation of the Board founders award were made.
afsp90_02 was promoted up from Sr. Command Advisor to Lieutenant Forum Commandant and Smitty moved up from LT Command Advisor to Sr Command advisor.
afsp also accepted the Commanding officer of the awards comity position that is charged with helping me monitor what members are deserving of what awards.
We've experienced some posative growth in membership and are now sporting 90 members.
I'm sure some of them are SpamBots but no matter they will be delt with soon enough.
On a lighter note we've had some new members register and jump right in
Thanks, Barb, Roadie, USMCWife, cptntom and Walts Wink
We continue to grow and exceed my expected goals when the forum was first created.
I'm sure most of you have noticed by now that TrafficZap has been pulled and the reasons for that are it was causing problems with page loading and I was getting too many complaints about the Pop-ups blocking out the forum page, those were supposed to be pop-unders per my understanding of the system but to me anything that pops-up over the page you are trying to view is not a pop-under but a pop-up.
We've never tolorated pop-ups and I don't plan on starting now.
Also I'm fixing to pull the Webring codes from the forum for a couple of reassons the main one being I belive that is where the SpamBots are locating our forum through. I don't know for sure but once I joined them the Bots really began flooding in here.
We've seen the adition of new features from our host such as the re-instatement of the point system and the edition of the Karma system and the refferal system which I hope each of you will take advantage of when inviting new members to our community.
In just over 3 months we will be celebrating our first year as a forum community and I am proud as I can be of what we have accompllished in that time.
1 year may not seem like much but I'm telling you if you can make a good forum that is still active even through 3 moves from host to host and a near shut down plus a server crash it demonstrates the dedication of it's members but does not solidify our standing just yet.
That will come in time as we continue to move forward as a community.
I know there are some out there that are praying for us to fail so that I will come crawling back with my tail tucked between my legs asking to be let back in but guess what?
Not in this lifetime!! there are way too many options for me at this point to even think about doing that.
Besides I see no reasson to doubt our sucess as a forum.
You all have given me every reasson to belive we'll be around for a long, long time to come.
That is it for this month I'll post an update next month about what is going on and what has happened from now until then.
See ya next month keep moving forward,
OS

March 2007 Edition:
What can I say about the last month?
Boy what a ride.
Our Joint Operations list virtually exploded with new links being added almost daily the first three weeks of March.
On 5 March I decided it was time for us to expand our operation to include our very own HOME PAGE<--Click to visit.
I know there is a link at the top of the page that says home but that is part of the portal system that we have here which gives us an extra space for different things within the forum set up.
I was scared that all the banner exchanges that were comming in was going to fill that page up and we needed more room incase that did in fact happen.
So there is another site on the net now that will help give us room for expansion.
Besides that gives me a place for experimenting with things without running the risk of screwing up the forum here.
Honestly though I'll be the first to tell you I'm no techno wiz when it comes to writing code and doing facy stuff on a web site.
All that I know  now I've learned since 6 August 2005 which is the date I joined the very first forum I ever participated on.
I make an effort everyday to learn something new which is much easier now that the paranoia of failure or being "shang-highed" by others that got pissed over my going out on my own and starting the first forum.
No matter now though.
Now the ball is completly in our court, we can continue to grow and expand or we can stay the same and stagnate to the point where it gets so boring members start straying away and all the work we've all done dries up and fades into Cyber-Hell.
Internet sites are a dime a dozen these days I myself am proof posative that ANYBODY can start a site and run With it
All you need is a computer and very basic knowlege of how things work.
One leasson I've learned since 29 May of last year is you  DO NOT need to start big with the highest numbers ever.
Start small and if what you are doing is interesting to others your site WILL grow in time as you learn new tricks to improve your product.
The trick I beleive is finding your "niche" and target like mined folks to recruit.
Don't worry about being an "overnight sucess" because I just don't think there is any such thing.
Ok with that said,
The last week or so the participation levels have droped here significantly for some reason.
Our Commandant Doc McKelvie is on sick leave until his heath improves.
Others have job issues that keep them at bay most of the time.
Some have their own sites to tend to and nurture.
All of those I understand but for about a week solid I could not get off this computer because of this and that needing tending to.
Posts were comming in at a rate I could barely keep up with and to tell you the truth I loved it.
But this I'm sure is only a phaze of down-time for us maybe it will pick up again soon.
At least I hope it does.
Until next month,
Carry on...

Glad to hear things are going well. I have been fighting malware on the PC and trying to get some artwork done. I am watching the mail though to try and keep up. I know what you mean though, my site went dry the last week or so. Maybe spring break is keeping folks busy elsewhere.

God I dread the summer months as I know things will take a real nose dive participation wise but I'm sure we'll survive it.
The first forum was started in May and God was that painfull I wanted things to happen faster than they were going to.
Damn near drove myself nuts over it Cool
Well here comes Vacation time again and posting activity will slow to a crawl I'm afraid.
Thanks for your reply Elwingflys Wink

Hey! Relax you Big Kahuna!!!! You have a great forum going on here. Is getting close to tax time so people are working on that, and just like in my SLOOWWWW forum, there are DAYS that go back w/o a single post and then I get a porn post! Could be worse....

I've been trying to get some serious work on my Mom's quilt I've been making for the last year and it usually only takes me 4-5 months and has been computer time breaking into that....she's not getting younger and I want her to GET it!! LOL!!!! She's healthy - not meaning that. But need to be doing constructive stuff too, spring cleaning is coming up GAG!!!!!!! And getting things ready (OK...making lists) for the trip to DC next Thursday AM. That takes me so much time cause is so hard for me to think about what I need and don't NEED cause don't want to have much luggage. Is only 2 days, for heaven's sake!!! And making phone calls, etc. - HOPEFULLY Rep. Barbara Cubin (R-WY) is going to be at the presentation at Walter Reed, but is a voting day so is not sure. And working on getting media coverage...not sure if will have that & -probably will not know until we get there! :P

Don't feel like it's dying - Be patient...a lot going on all the time and sometimes it just seems everybody is busy at the same time!!!!!

Thanks WyoArmyMom, I know people get busy.
I myself will likely not be on much this weekend due to birthday parties to attend and other things I need to work on.
I will be taking advantage of the downtime to work on the main site and I'll also be doing some work here as time allows for me to.
I want to redo the Smillies and bring the Military ones up to show in the main box which means deleting all of them the re-loading each one, each one at a time.
That means all previously  posted smillies will be broken and I will have to edit them out of old posts as I find them.
It will be a couple of good solid hours of work for me I'm sure but I'm up for it.

Oh I will notify the members before I do any major surgery so they can be aware that things might look and act funny for a day or two.
I'll probably try.
The secondary goal from day 1 has always been growth.
We started about as simple as we could with a VERY basic board and here we are almost a full year later.
I LOVE it.
I'm extremly proud of all that has been accomplised in such a short time considering the circumstances.

You have done us all proud Sir.
I for one am astounded at the progress that has been made through all the BS and tough times we've endured in our short history you never once faltered in your resolve to make this one of the best damn forums around.
With the new edition of the Main site which looks OUTSTANDING BTW, I'd dare say the growth potential we have here is looking good.
I think the "killjoy" that jumped ship on us a while back is going to regret his decision in the end.
We WILL take this hill with you at the Con and the rest of us waiting to see what tricks you pull out of your hat next I think you've proven yourself more than anyone ever thought you would[Yourself included]
Carry on Sir you've made me proud to call you friend and boss.
Forward MARCH!! Senior Drill Instructor
Elwingflys don't give up times might get slow on your forums Hang in there kid it will pick up again.
God knows we've seen times where only two or three were activly participating and none were joining so your frustration is VERY understood around here.
There was even a time right here on this board that OS was pretty much the only one doing anything activly every day.

I'm sure it will. It really takes a few dedicated posters to keep things going.

Hello to one and all.  I am sorry that I have been absent for so long and believe me when I say I have missed you all and the forum itself.  As your Commandant, I have felt guilty about my inability to do my job as I feel it should be done; which is to be a regular and consistant participant in the regular activities of the forum.  I am very fortunate indeed to have a boss/partner in Jimmy who is so understanding and a staff that is so dedicated and ready to do what is necessary to keep this forum on track and growing faster all the time.

As Jimmy has noted, the state of this forum is better than ever and it just keeps getting better.  Jimmy's vision is becoming a reality and I am proud to have been one of the founders of the forum.  Keep up the great work everyone. That includes both staff and general members.  You're all important to me and this forum and I couldn't be prouder than I am of all of you.

I hope to soon return to more regular duty soon, but still have some medical hurdles to overcome.  Barbara, Scottish Lady, will keep you informed and I will try to get online whenever I am able.  PLEASE be patient with me and I will do my very best to prove your patience and trust in me is justified.

Meanwhile, take care and all my best to you and yours.

Sincerely,

David A. (Doc) McKelvie

April 2007
Well here we are still chugging right along and quicky approaching our first full year as a community.
I tell you the past 30 days or so have been a hell of a ride.
We had the upgrade last week that nearly drove alot of us over the edge waiting for the boards to come back on-line.
Your Commandant Doc McKelvie has continued to battle with his health condition and he has felt the dissapointment of not being able to fulfill his duties.
I have assured him that his position is safe for as long as he wishes to remain in it.
I understand that things in life happen and I know the day is comming that he might need to step down as with each one of us here situations change, people change, my hope is that when the day comes that I must step down this forum will be in a position to continue without me.
I am closely monitoring different members to put into the proper positions
to keep the forum going in the event something happens to me.
Each member here staff or general member are equally important to this forums survival.
IT CANNOT  continue without you all.
I'm just the founder there WILL come a day when I am not able to be here anylonger.
Just as our countries founding fathers time passed so shall my time as your founder.
Until that day comes though I assure you that I will do all I can to ensure whoever I pass the torch to will be fit for the job and will lead you all in much the same mannor as I have tried maybe even better.
*Back on track here*
Lets recap the last 30 days as best I can remember.
Nearly 200 accounts were deleted from the database and several IPs and other methods of banishment were handed down to ALL suspected SpamBots using Bogus Email accounts.
I have decided to make our forum Invitation only so you will need to tell any perspective members they need to contact me via email in order to be sent an invitation to join the forum.
That is all I can think of right off the top of my head at the moment.
Feel free to add any comments you might have

Hi all,

First of all I want to thank Jimmy, Outsider, for his continued support and faith in me.  I will try my best to justify his belief in me.

Second, I would like to say that while we continue to get Spambots and other insincere member applicants; I am pleased with the growth, overall, of the forum.  Let's all keep the momentum going as Jimmy pointed out.  It really does require all our combined effort to keep this forum going; even when your leaders find that they must step aside for those more capable of carrying on what we have started.  This forum and the one named for me are essential to both our veterans and active/reserve duty personnel.  We cannot drop our guard or become lax in our committment to those we've chosen to serve and who have more than earned our continued committment and efforts on their behalf.

Well, that's my soapbox speech for this month anyway.  LOL  Thank you all for your continued involvement in the mission of this and the forum named after me.  Jimmy and I are partners and not competitors and while our approaches are somewhat different in the two forums; the end results are the same and that is to give our veterans and active/reserve duty personnel the best service possible.

Take care all and all my best to you and yours.

Sincerely,

Doc

Smile

July 2007
Well have not done one of these since April so lets try to catch up:
After all accounts were removed from the data base we were down from nearly 400 members to just 44 Shocked  As of today we are back up to 45 with at least one more expected to join soon.
We've now got two new M.S.T. poolees currently in training and their commissions are expected to be made official by 21 July.
We ARE still growing and now the members joining are doing so because they seem to have a real interest in being here not just stupid Spam Bots looking for free advertising.
Even though I was considering dropping the invitation only registration policy
I think we'll stick with it for a while longer as it really filters out disinterested parties from joining and the bots don't use valid emails anyway and this helps keep them from flooding our forum like they were doing in the beginning Rolling Eyes
More to follow in August I hope.
