"USS John C. Stennis (CVN-74) departed San Diego, California, Calif. 7 January 2000, embarking CVW-9 operating out of her home port at Naval Air Station Lemoore, she will under go her first "Westpac” deployment operating with the Pacific Fleet and 7th Fleet in the Western Pacific, her first Indian Ocean deployment (2nd voyage), on her second Arabian Sea/Gulf (Persian Gulf) deployment in support of Operation Southern Watch operating under operational control of the US Naval Forces Central Command and 5th Fleet., enforcing the no-fly zone south of the 32nd parallel in Iraq, the US 5th Fleet, reactivated with operational control of the Persian Gulf, Red Sea, and Arabian Sea, headquartered in Manama, Bahrain in July 1995, while U.S. Naval Forces Central Command operational control extends to the Indian Ocean following the war with Iraq (Operation Desert Storm), with the Commander, 7th Fleet, serving as naval component commander for Central Command, at the beginning of Operation Southern Watch (commencing 26 August 1992, when President George H. W. Bush announced that the United States and its allies had informed Iraq that in 24 hours Allied aircraft would fly surveillance missions in southern Iraq and were prepared to shoot down any Iraqi aircraft flying south of the 32nd parallel, while President George Bush declared Kuwait had been liberated at 9 p.m. EST 27 February 1992, flight operations ending at midnight), with Operation Desert Storm commencing in the early morning hours of 17 January 1991 until 27 February 1992, when President George Bush declared Kuwait had been liberated and Operation Desert Storm would end at midnight) and Operation Desert Shield commencing 2 August 1990 (Iraqi occupation of Kuwait). She will under go her third deployment since her commission 9 December 1995" (Ref. 72, 76, 84A & 365).
USS John C. Stennis (CVN-74) normally operates as the centerpiece of a Carrier Battle Group commanded by a flag officer embarked and consists of four to six other ships and is composed of Carrier Wing 9; Destroyer Squadron 21 and surface and subsurface vessels consisting of the guided-missile cruisers USS Lake Champlain (CG 57) and USS Port Royal (CG 73); guided-missile destroyers USS Russel (DDG 59) and USS Elliot (DD 967); destroyer USS Caron (DD 970); guided-missile frigate USS Rentz (FFG 46); replenishment ship USS Bridge (AOE 10); and attack submarines USS Asheville (SSN 758) and USS Jefferson City (SSN 759). Amphibious Squadron 3 was assigned in 2000.

Underway in the Western Pacific near Japan from 24 to 25 January 2000 and the Sea of Japan, conducting operations in Korean East Sea from 26 to 27 January 2000, making a port call at Pusan, South Korea from 28 to 31 January 2000, underway in the East China Sea from 3 to 4 February 2000, underway in the South China Sea from 6 to 7 February 2000, making a port call at Hong Kong from 8 to 11 February 2000, John C. Stennis made a port call at Kelang, Malaysia from 16 to 20 February 2000. Underway in the Indian Ocean from 22 to 25 February 2000, John C. Stennis relieved the USS JOHN F. KENNEDY Battle Group in Operation Southern Watch in the Arabian Gulf on 26 February 2000. Underway in the Persian Gulf from 1 to 13 March 2000, John C. Stennis made a port call at Bahrain, UAE from 20 to 27 March 2000, followed by an underway period in the Persian Gulf from 3 to 7 April 2000, John C. Stennis made a port call at Jebel Ali, UAE from 10 April 2000. Underway in the Persian Gulf from 17 to 24 April 2000, John C. Stennis made a port call at Jebel Ali, UAE on 1 May 2000, followed by an underway period in the Persian Gulf from 8 to 15 May 2000, making a port call at Jebel Ali, UAE on 21 May 2000. Underway in the Arabian Sea on 26 May 2000 and the Indian Ocean on 27 May 2000, John C. Stennis crossed the equator on 28 May 2000. Crossing the southern half of the Indian Ocean on 30 May 2000, John C. Stennis was underway in the Indian Ocean off the west coast of Australia from 1 to 3 June 2000, making a port call at Fremantle, port of Perth, Australia from 4 to 7 June 2000, followed by an underway period in the Indian Ocean off the south coast of Australia from 7 to 9 June 2000, prior to making a port call at Hobart, Tasmania from 12 to 16 June 2000, sailing East across the Pacific towards Hawaii from 17 to 19 June 2000. Underway East across the Pacific on 24 June 2000, John C. Stennis suffered the loss of an F-14 of VF-211 attached to CVW-9, crashing into the Pacific, 1,400 miles south-west of Hawaii, while both aviators ejected and were recovered half an hour later on 25 June 2000. John C. Stennis made a port call at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii from 26 to 28 June 2000, conducting "Tiger Cruise" from Pearl Harbor, Hawaii to San Diego, Calif., from 28 June to 2 July 2000, traveling more than 34, 000 miles over 13 time zones, during which time CVW-9 flew more than 10,000 sorties in several regions of the world, including over Iraq in support of Operation Southern Watch, making 10 port visits to eight countries including South Korea, Hong Kong, Malaysia, Bahrain, UAE and Australia. her third deployment ended (7 January 1998 to 3 July 2000) since her commision 9 December 1995" (Ref. 72, 76, 84A & 365).
