ARLINGTON, Va. (Army News Service, Dec. 14, 2007) -- More than 140 National Guard members in the Midwest responded this week to a band of deadly, mid-December storms that stretched from eastern Texas to the Ohio Valley and into northern New York and New England.
Trees and power lines in some states were brought down by inch-thick ice accumulations, which closed roadways and left thousands in need of emergency assistance from federal, local and state agencies.
In Kansas, the Kansas National Guard provided emergency power for water-treatment facilities, sewer systems and shelters in at least two counties. Nearly 130,000 residents were without power there. Guard units also delivered cots to Red Cross shelters and were planning observation flights to check on remote residents.
"We have seen a huge increase in requests for Guard support," said Sharron Watson, a Kansas Guard spokesperson. "Generator missions have been the biggest request, but we have also had our Guard members out clearing roadways in southeast Kansas."
In Missouri, Governor Matt Blunt declared a state of emergency Sunday. National Guard members activated that night and were out on the streets providing assistance by Monday morning.
Guard members in the state responded quickly to the call. An Army Guard armory in the state was used as a warming shelter and Soldiers provided security for residents there. Soldiers also provided transportation and cleared debris from roadways. Members of the 203rd Engineer Battalion provided generators and conducted door-to-door wellness checks for rural areas in Barton County.
In neighboring Oklahoma, Governor Brad Henry declared a state of emergency for all 77 counties, due to the widespread freezing rain there. The state's joint-operations center coordinated missions and Guard members there responded to requests for assistance by transporting 100 cots and opening a Red Cross warming shelter at the armory in Broken Arrow.
Oklahoma Guard members also responded to at least five requests for emergency power in the state's northeastern region. They provided fresh water to residents in Wikiupp and delivered more than 1,000 sandbags in Clatsop County.

You have to give it up for our NG those men & Women are good at what they do.
They may not always bear the weight that our full time soldiers do but when the chit hits the fan here at home they're always right on the problem.
I've never been in the guard but I HAVE been a Vol firefighter and I can tell you being out in freezing temperatures trying to clear roadways is NO easy task and though you're not faced with bullets and bombs flying all around you it is STILL very dangerous to say the least.

I would like to say that I don't know what it is like to be out in freezing temps clearing snow and ice but I do....LOL. Not in this sense, but shoveling the driveway and sidewalk when it is Neg 30 like it is right at this moment.
Yes, you do have to give it up for them. They are definately on the ball when needed at home and work very hard at it. _________________

I agree those men and women don't get enough credit. I can feel for those people in the mid-west. Two years ago we were without power for over a week because of an ice storm and it wasn't fun. We live in a rural area so we were low on the list but made it. Thankfully we have a stream running through our property so we could get water, if you could stand to go outside. Our biggest problem was heat. It gave a whole new meaning to Christmas that year as that is when it hit.
Amy, neg 30, you can keep that. I guess I shouldn't complain when last week we were at zero. _________________

Yup....we hit Neg 40 today with the wind chill making it feel like Neg 57. It is awful. You can't take a deep breath when you are outside or you will just start coughing. Walking from the car into anywhere is awful. I had to take my son to school today and then me and my daughter went to Walmart...had to leave the car running. By the time we got back home it was just long enough to eat and get semi warm before we were out in it again to go get my son. Even though we have been home for hours I am just still chilled to the bone. I am so glad that Christmas break is on it's way. No getting out in it everyday until my son goes back to school. The one thing I hate more about this weather is the fact....well...this weekend for instance. It is our winter solstice. The shortest day of the year. They are going to have all kinds of activities and such downtown and fireworks. TOO COLD to go enjoy it. I am sure for people who have been here for several years this isnt' much of a problem for them. Well, I was born and raised in Alabama and have only lived here since June of last year. I am not in any way used to this kind of weather.....LOL I am going to go NUTS when hubby does get deployed and here I am with 2 in school.....LOL. _________________
