SUBGRU/SUBRON/SUBDEVRON/DSRV MASTER – Up dated 18 July 2008

Submarine Squadrons provide the maintenance support for submarines. A Submarine Squadron typically consists of about half a dozen nuclear-powered submarines, and may also include a submarine tender and a floating drydock. In addition to the operational ships, the squadron staff is responsible for providing training, material and personnel readiness support. The Squadron 20 commander is responsible for five submarines and the 10 crews that man those submarines at all times. Squadron 20 is also the waterfront coordinator and principal squadron involved in planning and executing all SSBN refits with Trident Refit Facility. He is also responsible for all material readiness and fiscal responsibility. Submarine Squadron 16 was officially reactivated Aug. 7, 1997 as part of a Navywide effort to improve submarine support. Under this new model for supervising the operation, maintenance and training of the two-crewed submarine force, five submarines are in each Kings Bay squadron. By reducing the span of control to five submarines and 10 crews, each squadron can dedicate more effort to monitoring and servicing the submarines under its control. Additional new efficiencies were gained through specialization of the two squadrons. Squadron 20 remains the waterfront coordinator and principal squadron involved in planning and executing SSBN refits with the Trident Refit Facility. Squadron 16 has assumed the role of off-crew training coordinator and principal squadron involved in training and certifying that off-crews are ready to return to their ships. Squadron 16 also has the added benefit of more closely linking off-crew training to at-sea training.

SUBRON is the United States Navy (USN) abbreviation for Submarine Squadron. A SUBRON usually consists of three or more submarines. It is the submarine force equivalent to a Destroyer Squadron or DESRON in the surface Navy. However, unlike a DESRON -- which actually moves its staff aboard its ships and deploys with them as an operational Task Element commander -- a SUBRON commander and his staff always remain in homeport, and are responsible only for the training, equipping and administering of the ships under its umbrella.

The officer in charge of SUBRON ONE is designated Commander Submarine Squadron One or COMSUBRON ONE.

Several SUBRONs may be organized into a Submarine Group (SUBGRU), headed under a flag officer. For instance, CSS-17 and CSS-19 are both part of SUBGRU-9 in Bangor, Washington. The overall responsibility for submarines on the west coast of the United States is taken by the Commander Submarine Force, U.S. Pacific Fleet (COMSUBPAC); on the east coast, the same responsibility rests with the Commander Submarine Force, Atlantic Fleet (COMSUBLANT). The latter is the senior of the two, and thus also plays a secondary role as Commander, Submarine Force (COMSUBFOR).

When a submarine deploys, for instance as part of a Carrier Strike Group, operational command is transferred to the numbered fleet commander for the theater to which the submarine is deploying, e.g., or Commander Fifth Fleet (COMFIFTHFLT).

TRIDENT is the Navy's third generation fleet ballistic missile program. Each TRIDENT submarine operates with two distinct crews, the "BLUE" and "GOLD" crews. By having two separate crews, with two commanding officers, the submarine is able to stay on alert for the majority of each year. A typical cycle has one crew on "patrol" while the other trains ashore. This is followed by a combined-crew refit period in port where the boat is prepared for sea. Prior to the boat leaving for another patrol and upon completion of refit, the crews "switch" places, and the cycle begins again. In 1973, the Navy announced the selection of Bangor as the home port for the first squadron on TRIDENT submarines. The base was officially activated as a submarine base on February 1, 1977.

Navy Announces Christening of Submarine New Hampshire

The Navy’s newest attack submarine New Hampshire (SSN 778) will be christened Saturday, June 21, during an 11:00 a.m. EDT ceremony at Electric Boat in Groton, Conn.

Director of Naval Reactors, Adm. Kirkland Donald, will deliver the ceremony’s principal address.  Cheryl McGuinness of Portsmouth, N.H., will serve as New Hampshire’s sponsor.  Ms. McGuinness is the widow of Thomas McGuiness, co-pilot of American Airlines Flight 11 which was flown into the North Tower of the World Trade Center in the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks. The highlight of the ceremony will be Ms. McGuinness christening the ship by breaking a bottle of sparkling wine over the submarine, a time honored Navy tradition.

The fifth Virginia-class submarine, New Hampshire is the third ship to honor the Granite State. The first USS New Hampshire was in service from 1846-1921, including service during the Civil War. Later, she was renamed Granite State following decommissioning and was used as a training ship for the New York State Militia. The second USS New Hampshire (1908-1921) was a battleship used for convoy escort duty during World War I and also served as a training ship.

Along with her sister ships, New Hampshire, will provide the Navy with the capabilities required to maintain the nation's undersea supremacy well into the 21st century.

Cmdr. Mike Stevens will become the ship’s first commanding officer and will lead a crew of approximately 134 officers and enlisted personnel.

The 7,800-ton New Hampshire is built under a teaming arrangement between General Dynamics Electric Boat (Connecticut) and Northrop Grumman Shipbuilding - Newport News (Virginia). She is 337 feet in length, has a beam of 34 feet, and can operate at more than 25 knots submerged.

Additional information about this class of submarine is available online at

Nuclear powered attack submarines are designed to find and destroy enemy submarines and surface vessels. Modern US Navy attack submarines are also equipped with Tomahawk cruise missiles which give them an additional land attack capability.
