Matthew Gobble, a 2001 graduate of East Davidson High School, was wounded after being hit by shrapnel from a nearby grenade explosion.   According to initial reports, he is being cared for at Landstuhl Redgional Medical Center in Ramstein, Germany, where he is expected to fully recover from all injuries.  Nine others were killed when Taliban militants attacked Gobble's base in Wanat, Afghanistan, along the Pakistan-Afghanistan border, including Cpl. Pruitt A. Rainey of Haw River.   The incident is the deadliest attack on U.S. forces in Afghanistan in three years.   Stationed in Valencia, Italy, Gobble has been overseas since his May 2007 deployment. Both he and Rainey were scheduled to return home in two weeks.   In an interview with WXII-TV, Gobble's father said he spent the last few days on his porch worrying that his son would have the same fate as Rainey.   "I was thinking the worst," Mike Gobble said. "I want to see him and hug him. I don't know if I want to let him go."   Gobble's mother Sandra said she is thankful her son is alive and her thoughts and prayers go out to Rainey's family and all the soldiers who continue to fight for freedom.   "I can't imagine what that family is going through," said Mike Gobble.
