|
|
I read this in today's paper and thought it just
so awsome that someone at that age to do this.
AUTHOR UNKNOW
ASSO. PRESS REPORT.
NEW BERN (N.C.) (AP)---Few are those women who, just
months shy of their 40th birthday, enlist in the U.S. Army
during time of war.
Fewer still are those who serve with distinction in over-
seas campaigns and then author a memoir about the
experience six decades later.
But fewest yet are those who belong to the proud group
of which New Bern resident Laura Mae DuFore is a member.
Dufore turned 103 on Dec. 22 and is America's second-
oldest female veteran and the oldest surviving member of
the now-defunct Women's Army Auxilliary Corps.
A birthday party wastn't what the north Michigan native
wanted to speak about. DuFore-quick, clear-eyed and only
recently confined to a wheelchair-dips deep into the past
to draw on the prsent.
It's something to be almost 103 and to be a first-time
author," DuFore said.
DuFore published her candid, "A Life So Full," to chronicle
her life and service as a WAAC supply clerk in New Guinea
and the Philippines during World War II. The work is a
continuation of the independence that has become a hallmark
of her long life.
"I don't want to have to rely on taxpayers," she said.
So she wrote the book this year - "all of it, myself," she
said - thinking she had some thing to say and something of
which people should take note.
As with most significant decisions she's made in her life,
she's probabley right.
"It's important for posterity," said Lou Cook, membership
vice chairman for the American Legion in North Carolina.
"Here we are, losing World War II veterans - and we're trying
to capture as much of that history as possible and pass it on
to a new generation."
DuFore willingly imparts her lessons.
"Not many people get into as many things as I do," DuFore
said. "This is the way I've been since I walked away from
home - at 17 years, five months old - without a nickle."
What DuFore would walk into would be a lifetime of
accepting challenges, embracing experiences and turning
setbacks about-face.
"I've never depended on other people to work for me or
wait on me," DuFore said. "When you get older, you have
to depend on yourself."
Bravo Ms. DuFore
May God Bless you with many more years. _________________

I used to ask God if He would come and help me. Then I asked if I could come and help Him.
Finally I ended by asking God to do His own work through me. |

Wow, God Bless her and those like her. Women suffered greatly in the Philippines during the war as much or more than the men in some cases particularly if captured by the Japanese. _________________
