Navy maps out transition plan for new helicopters
Sea Power, Nov 2003 by Burgess, Richard R.
The Navy has further detailed its plan to reorganize its helicopter communities to use the new MH-60 helicopters to full advantage. Prepared by the Office of the Chief of Naval Operations to be implemented over the next 12 years, the Helicopter Master Plan increases the number of fleet helicopter squadrons from 25 to 31, and consolidates the existing three helicopter communities into two.

SH-60B Sea Hawk
The SH-60B "Seahawk" is a single main rotor, twin-engine helicopter, manufactured by the United Technologies Corporation, Sikorsky Aircraft Division. The helicopter has a 20degree tractor-type canted tail rotor, a controllable stabilator, conventional fixed landing gear, emergency flotation, an external cargo hook, a rescue hoist, and bomb racks for carrying and launching external stores. In addition, it is equipped with a flight-rated auxiliary power unit, a sonobuoy-launch system, an anti-ice system, a fire-extinguishing system, an environmental control system, an automatic flight control system (AFCS), a single-point pressure refueling system, a helicopter in-flight refueling (HIFR) system, and the necessary avionics and instrumentation for instrument flight and mission accomplishment. The helicopter design is compatible with ships equipped with a recovery, assist, securing and traversing (RAST) system, and the main rotor blades and tail pylon can be folded for storage. In addition, the helicopter can operate on non-RAST equipped combatants and a variety of other naval ships.
The SH-60B is designed to operate as an integral fighting unit aboard specifically configured OLIVER HAZARD PERRY (FFG 7) class Guided Missile Frigates, SPRUANCE (DD 963) class Destroyers, ARLEIGH BURKE (DDG 51) class Guided Missile Destroyers and TICONDEROGA (CG 47) class Guided Missile Cruisers. What makes the SH-60B different from other helicopters (such as the Army's BLACKHAWK) is its capability to fully integrate with LAMPS capable warships. The Light Airborne Multipurpose System (LAMPS) is part of a complete weapon (ship/air) system. http://www.hsl43.navy.mil/sh60b/sh60b.html

The first response teams for a suspected mine crisis are the Airborne Mine Countermeasures squadrons. Their helicopter-towed equipment provides the fastest and safest operations in the MCM arena. Even when surface MCM ships are available to the Fleet, Airborne MCM is often called upon to assess the extent of the threat prior to risking expensive ship assets. The helicopter squadrons are fully capable of many missions, including:
precursory assessments of suspicious areas
thorough reconnaissance of the area
sweeping -- or artificially "exciting" -- the mines
locating individual mines for removal by surface assets
defining the limits of the dangerous area assessing the extent to which MCM operations have been successful.
As political complexion of the world continues to change, the U.S. Navy must remain a vigilant, capable force to protect not only our rights but those of our neighbors and allies. When called, the Vanguard will always provide the fleet with the finest airborne mine countermeasures expertise and capability to ensure safe passage of the seas. http://members.aol.com/helmineron
Helicopter Sea Combat Wing, Atlantic Fleet
HELSEACOMBATWINGLANT
In April of 2005, Helicopter Tactical Wing, Atlantic Fleet [HELTACWINGLANT] and Helicopter Anti-Submarine Wing, Atlantic Fleet [HSWINGLANT] were merged into Helicopter Sea Combat Wing, Atlantic Fleet [HELSEACOMBATWINGLANT]. This merger was a result of the Navy moving toward a reduction in aircraft types.
Helicopter Tactical Wing, Atlantic Fleet [COMHELTACWINGLANT] is homeported at Naval Station Norfolk, Virginia. The wing's six squadrons, HCS-2, HC-4, HC-6, HC-8, HM-14, and

COMHELTACWINGLANT squadrons operate a multitude of aircraft and equipment including VH-3A, UH-3H, CH-46D, HH-46D, UH-46D, MH-53E, Unmanned Aerial Vehicles, and aerial and surface targets.
